Ok ... the commentators are giving all the speeds in km/hr ... i was doing the conversion on the
times for stage 7 ... 230.5 km ... done in 6 hours 6 minutes ... come out with an average of 37.8
km/hr ... convert it to real speeds;-) you get 23.5mph for the longest stage with the most brutal
climbs ... is that right?? I know these guys cook going down hill ... but I don't care how fast you
go down ... unless your up hills are fast your average sucks ... how fast ARE they climbing anyway??

My WAG is that they're climbing these 7%-ers at about 15 mph, twice what I climb the typical 7%-er.

Alpe d'Huez climb is 13.8km.
Pantani's record time is 37 minutes which makes his average 14.0mph.
Mayo's time this year is 39'05" = 13.2mph. -

It's a good way for folks to work out the strength of the rider on any climb without knowing their
power output/weight/heartrate/whatever. Simoni on the Zoncolan this year was in the 1700's I
think, which means he would have been competitive on the climbs in this Tour had he been at his
best - Lance and
co. were in the 1600's on Alpe d'Huez.The Giro seemed to have taken it out of Simoni, but his confidence coming into the Tour is
understandable. Whether it was a good idea to talk about it is another question that has been
discussed in other threads.Jeff
