What would I do? I'd get a set of wheels with V-compatible rims, or a new frame. Depends on how much
you like your frame, what you want to end up with, how much you want to spend, and how much you like
discs and matching wheels.

I'm assuming that you bought the Deore/X223 wheels relatively cheaply (since they're very common).
Don't forget to stress-relieve and true/tighten as needed. It makes a difference.

Yes. Last time I looked, LX comes in bottom pull version. The Deore front derailleur is a dual-pull
(top or bottom) design.

Oh well. I asked for answers. FWIW; I thought that since I had two decent wheels free of charge I'd
use them. I figured that with deore hubs and mavic rims that they're bloody marvellous compared to
the cheap, no name inhouse, worn out and buckled pieces of old [censored] that are on the old frame now.
What does it matter? I know for a fact that the old piece of [censored] wheel _will_ buckle again because
I have buckled it many a time in the past. If it was a decent serviceable wheel I WOULD leave it and
use it as is. As is I have been out riding it anyway (Mental note to self: Must change the existing
8 speed cassette to the 9 speed now that I've swapped the 9 speed derailleurs and shifters over.)

As far as the fashion show idea goes, well, what the hell. It wasn't like it was costing me
anything. It wasn't like I wanted to spend much money on
it. It's a hobby, isn't it?

Depends on the bike, cost of the wheels, cost of the frame, etc. It sounded to me like the OP might
be ready for a disc-compatible frame. Did you even think about that possibility? Guess not. Too busy

A frame swap is a good idea except I don't want to spend any money! Basically what's happened was
that my '03 NRS2 got run over and the frame was ruined. Most of the components were just fine. I've
spent my money (and a small amount of the insurance company's) and put it towards a whole new bike
rather than get just a new frame. In the meantime while I hang out for a ride, I thought that I
would put the components on my old crapped out Haro hardtail (USD$450ish new 4 years ago) for little
or no cost. While not the best frame, it is cheap and I actually quite like/d it.

Only real problem that I've got is that I know next to nothing about wheels and rims and thought
that somehow there must be a cheap way of converting the mavic disc wheelset to use with v brakes. I
wanted to pop the mavic wheel onto the haro frame for next to nothing. Afterall, it should be
lighter, stronger and have a better hub than the inhouse Haro rear wheel????? ...Not to mention that
it'd be a matching colour ;-)

A hardtail for next to nothing is my aim here.

My apologies. I had no particular problem with your original question. (Why not just lace a new rim
onto your existing hub?)
