With all this insane Melbourne weather (30 deg and fire bans in April what the) I'm hoping to fit in a family ride on Sunday (after BR, yikes). Was thinking of driving over to the Maribyrnong river and riding along the path there. I'm looking for suggestions on a good section of the path, ie. not too challenging for the trailer bike (discovered last Monday on the Diamond Creek path that pedestrian crossings at train lines are not trailer bike friendly 🙁 ). We'll park the car somewhere and ride in a direction and then back to the car. So I'm probably only looking for a section of path 5-10km long (and a decent playground along the way will keep my daughter happy).

gday dave, i used to ride along there when i lived near highpoint/knifepoint.. theres a little park just near highpoint called pipemakers park which has plenty of car spaces. if you then head east along the bike path, you go past anglers tavern and its a pretty good path for a few kms up to a bridge, where you can either cross and return or go over the bridge and head up towards essendon. up near the bridge theres a pretty big playground area for the kids..

You could park at the Kensington Adventure Playground (in Kensington Road), join the path in Kensington Banks (the new housing estate across the road) and head across the river there (just past the tennis courts, down towards Epsom Road). While either left or right are nice and flat, avoid going towards Williamstown (left) with the trailer as there are some annoying S-bend set ups over railway lines which may not keep the trailer happy (but your daughter might like looking at the boats). Going right will take you through Footscray gardens (plenty of playground equipment), past Flemington racecourse across the river, Pipemakers park/museum, up to the Anglers' (nice beer garden) and through up to Essendon. Then it gets hilly... you could cross the river again and explore the other side on the way back, but I suggest crossing back at Maribyrnong Road to avoid a hilly detour with the trailer.

Between the HCC ITT and LangLang sounds like it might be a small turnout for BR. I'll probably ride even if it's on my own. Anyone else likely to turn up?

My racing career is over (hahaha, he said career!) so I could probably manage another one of these BR's, assuming I haven't taken my roadie home by then.. maybe I should bring the tourer to put it through its paces? 🙂

hehe yeah.. I'll keep racing.. it's the only thing that I get excited enough about to keep fit(ish) with 🙂
Might see if the poms will let me use the GT in their TT's? 😄 "Oh, no son, those panniers give you an unfair advantage down hills.."
Strange thing is, I'm already looking forward to ripping those silly things off and using the GT around London hehe 🙂

I'm finally back in Melbourne, but I haven't really cycled for 2 weeks (half an hour on one of those machine thingies, and 2 hours on a slow ride around the Canberra lake don't count). I'm going to test out my legs tomorrow, and then see.
