  1. Hi,

Have several questions about the working of marathon teams, relays, etc. If you have a 2 person team
where 1 person runs a half, the other runs a half, is that considered both do the marathon? Do they
get medals? Do both have to finish? Same questions go for relays, basically I want to know the
logistics of how they work. Thanks,

    Vic

I've run a 5 person marathon team and a 2 person marathon team. They only thing the team got, if
they do not place, is they get to keep the baton, and that normally ends up with the last runner.

I wish marathons would not use the same medallions they have used before. Heck, you might as well
just throw it in the garbage after the marathon, or leave it somewhere, someone else can pick it
up. I don't see any reason to keep two of the same medallion if they are identical, even down to
    the strap.

If the race allows for teams, and it's not specifically stated as a relay race, then all runners
must finish and it's the team with the best "n" finishers who win. Everyone runs as an individual
but they "pool" their performances for the additional team prize.

If it is advertised as a 42.195km race do-able in relays, then the handover points will be fixed in
the race rules. Each runner can usually do more than one leg if they want/are capable but non are
obliged to run the whole distance.

    There's a 6-person marathon event (ie 42.195km) called an "Ekiden", done as 5k, 10k, 5k, 10k, 5k,
7.195k. Everyone gets a medal or goody bag or whatever. There's even a national championship in some
    countries.

Relays for all distances have varying rules, many (in this country anyway) have a shorter, final leg
which the whole team must to run together to the finish.

For example, next week I've got roped into a seven-person, two-day relay in the Pyrenees foothills.
Each runner has two legs (first to catch the pun before it falls, gets a pint of Theakstone's Old
Peculiar) to do each day and one of the runners has an extra 2k sprint to do in town at the end.

Not sure this answers your question?

The relays are generally considered a "separate" event although they're run on the same course at
the same time. At Cowtown this year each person on the team got a medal (the final runner got the
whole team's set at the finish and was charged with handing them out). I didn't look to see if they
were different from the solo runners' medals.

There will generally be fixed handoff sites. Some races also supply buses to shuttle the runners to
and from the exchange points. Races using chip technology can let the officials at the exchanges
know a bit ahead of time which team's runner is approaching.

Beyond that, each race probably does everything differently.

Victoria, let me put this simply. A marathon is not a team event.

  8. The ways in which marathon relays are run are as numerous as the number of them that are run. I've
done many and every one was different, from the way they did the legs, to the finish, to what you
carried as a baton (wrist band, sash, baton, etc). You'd have to check the specific event you want
    to do. Andy Hass

  11. Not a marathon, but the Penna. Ave mile event on Saturday had a "dog trot" division (person + dog).
Timed & everything. It also had other races than just the mile. bj

WOOHOO I think he stung you Fraser. Of course you are a lousy troll. See a good troll wouldn't set
up a glass house full of [censored] like you
did. We all know you are just another [censored] telling tales to look good when it is all [censored]. I would
even bet you do not run at all. It is time you took this off your Callander before the people
you have trolled make you(th) their project. I wonder if Roger the football coach would like to
know what you have done with his name?
