You bet they were Dead Star.
I have personal knowledge on this one. Mapei was 100% dopped at all times---that's why they won 1,000 pro races in ten years.
When you take a photo of a Mapei rider post ride---at dinner, their faces glow like movie stars. (it's the growth hormones)
The owner knew and accepted doping. (He wanted to win)
You forgot:
These guys could NEVER win a Classic without steroids, cortisone and EPO. The doping apologists have NEVER been credible re: Mapei (chemicals)
This is not news.

Museeuw was with Domo-Farm Frites in 2001, Bartoli was indeed Mapei (did he go to Fassa Bortolo mid year?), VDB was Lampre. Of course, all rode for Mapei at some point in their careers. Lefevre was SD for Domo-Farm Frites in 2001 but Mapei in earlier years.
All this does remind me (yet again!) that all of these cyclists move around and the notion that particular teams can be singled out is downright silly..
