  8. I enjoy you, Dr. Chung. You have a simplistic and gentle
approach which makes one think logically. I'm starting to
weigh what I'm eating, just out of curiosity.

I've had friends on the Atkins diet who lost a lot of
weight. Right at first their cholesterol levels were doing
fine, but they became pains in the butt to dine with and be
generally around (irritable, snotty). I haven't seen them in
some time (hmmm....go on a diet and lose your friends!) so I
don't know where their health is now. It doesn't surprise me
    that people are suing.

A wise old doctor said 50 years ago that folks would do fine
if they ate well rounded and moderately, and had their #1
exercise be pushing themselves away from the table before
    becoming chuck full.

  9. Man sues Atkins diet promoters

By Jill Barton The Associated Press Friday, May 28, 2004

    PALM BEACH COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT

A West Palm Beach businessman sued the promoters of the
Atkins Diet and the estate of founder Dr. Robert Atkins,
alleging that the low-carb, high-fat meal plan clogged his
    arteries and threatened his health.

Jody Gorran sued Wednesday in Palm Beach County Circuit
Court. He said the suit is not about money, noting he is
seeking less than $15,000 in damages.

Instead, he said he wants the court to ban Atkins diet books
and products that don't have warning labels about potential
health risks. He said that he believes one-third of the
population is at risk for developing health problems when
they eat Atkins- endorsed meats and other foods that are
    high in saturated fat.

Gorran, 53, said Thursday he started the diet in May 2001
because his weight had risen from 140 to 148 pounds. In two
months, he said, his cholesterol rose from a normal 146 to
an unhealthy 230, and by October 2003, he needed heart
    angioplasty to clear arteries.

''I came very close to dying, and this is from a diet I
    thought was marvelous,'' said Gorran.

Atkins Nutritionals said in a statement that it stands by
the science that has ``repeatedly reaffirmed the safety and
health benefits of the Atkins Nutritional Approach.''

The company questioned the motivation of a Washington-based
advocacy group that helped Gorran with the suit. The group,
the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, promotes
a vegan diet banning meat, fish, dairy and egg products.

The group released details of Atkins' autopsy report in
February. Atkins died in April 2003 after slipping on an icy
sidewalk. The report showed Atkins, 72, had a history of
heart trouble, including congestive heart failure and high
    blood pressure.

The advocacy group said Gorran's suit is the first to
recently question the merits of the Atkins diet.

In 1979, a New York jury rejected a woman's lawsuit claiming
the Atkins Diet caused her heart disease.

  10. Thanx for stating the blatantly obvious. Here, let me join
    you.

The problem with people's diets today, and the leading cause
of obesity is "the way they eat".

The trick is "how" to eat less calories and "how" to control
you eating urges not "to" do it or "to" control them.

Such wisdom comes from God. Those estranged from God (look
in the dark corners of SMC for numerous examples) lack
    such wisdom.

May God bless you in Christ's name.

Ah......if you had read Dr. Chung's webpage you would know
that he was only suggesting the weighing of total food
intake just to get an idea of how many pounds of food you
    may typically eat per day.

He was not suggesting the continuation of doing it as a
routine 'diet' method. Yes, weighing everything all the time
would indeed make one a pain in the butt to dine with, as it
    does with any 'fanatical' approach.

Mirek, I don't think you're properly appreciating the
    wisdom here.

It's a very simple matter to put the food on a small,
unobtrusive=20 scale at the table so you can cut it in half
(otherwise it's just=20 guesswork and you know how bad
people are at estimating things) and=20 take it home to
weigh again (but remember to take it out of the box=20
first). Your friends will think you're very wise to do this,
so you'll=20 know how much food you ordered, but didn't eat,
while sitting with=20 them. And if it's less than 2 pounds,
you can just sit there and eat=20 the difference.

But wait... wouldn't that be very similar to weighing your
    food while=20 your friends watch...

    Oh, this is so complex...
