Based Norway with limited chance to get maps or guidebook, so the
easier a walk is to find/follow etc the better!

You could do Massanella from Lluc via Coll des Pratt, or L'Ofre or El
Cornadors from Biniaraix via Es Barranc (not a real scramble,)or Teix
via the Dukes path from Valdermossa (no scrambling), or Puig de sa
Rateta from the Cuber reservoir. They are all around the 1000m mark.
You will need a map which you can get in Palma - there is a specialst
map shop or try the tourist office by the station.

I'll second (and third) that: the best, though longer, approach IMHO
(which also avoids paying for access...) is from Son Massip on the
C710 west of Lluc, via the newly-reconstructed snow collectors' path,
then up Puig d'en Galileu, (point 1182, not where it's shown on the
map) west along the ridge (to approx. point 1188), down to the snow
houses at Coll des Telégrafos and up to Coll des Prat. For Massanella,
follow the wall up from Coll des Prat to the cliff and look for cairns
up to the right. We usually descend to Comafreda by one of the normal
routes and walk back up the road from the Coll de sa Batalla petrol
station, the only drawback to one of our favourite walks on the
island.

IGN Sheet 671-1 Selva (1:25 000) from the bookshop in Palma on the
corner of La Rambla and Calle de Arabí (if it's still there).
Lluís Vallcaneras' "20 Itineraris Alternatius per la serra de
Tramuntana (II)" has the Puig d'en Galileu ascent if you can decipher
Mallorquin, and most guidebooks cover Massanella.

Thanks to you all for your advice...

Massanella it was on a delightfully warm day last week...great variety
of scenery and wondeful views from the top. Will certainly be going
back. Did have to pay the 4 Euros but guess if you're there earlier or
later in day it's not a problem. Hey, but worth it!

Over the last fourteen years we've done most of the walks from most of
