Making Clipless Pedals into Platforms

They do exist. I've seen them in Ben Hayward's in Cambridge,
but that was a while back.

I always thought that one should be able to get a kit with 2
pieces of these per pedal to wrap your double-sided SPDs
into ordinary plastic platforms.

Yep - Shimano supply some plastic clip on platforms - easy
to fit and ideal for double-sided SPDs so that you can ride
in cleats one side of the pedal or normal shoes the other.

Your LBS should have them .... I think that the LBS may get
them free from Shimano as strictly speaking a new bike has,
by law, to be sold with pedal reflectors fitted so they fit
the platforms, that have reflectors, ready for customer to
remove them outside the shop!

They are. I bought a bike at the weekend with SPDs already
fitted. Over these were clipped two black plastic things
with reflectors attached. It turned one side of the pedal
into a flatty and left the other as SPD. Although I assume
these were fitted at the factory they may well be available
at an LBS. In fact Wheelspin in Huddersfield have the two
from my bike.

Bike shops (well, certainly Edinburgh Bike Shop) use 'em
on demo bikes, and a pair came on my Cannondale. But they
were lightweight plastic and not very durable, and the
guys at EBC said they were not recommended for cycling any
distance.

Hmm, yes I guess they might be flimsy. I didn't get a close
look as I just asked them to remove them.

Otherwise I'm sure I've seen the clip in plates advertised,
but can't remember where. I was searching for pedal
reflectors to fit SPD pedals at the time.

I have them on mine, and have left them on, its dead handy if you just want to nip to the shop or something, also useful if you have to ride anywhere where you might need to put your foot down suddenly.
You should be able to get them.
As far as strength goes, one of mine came out in a slight crash last week but it clipped back in easily enough.

Thanks for all the replies. Flimsy is not a problem since
they'll only be used to let people have a shot of the
Speedmachine (when I get round to ordering it).

LBS it is then and if they don't have any it's SJS (but
£10 seems a bit steep considering they give that sort of
thing away free with new bikes). Anyone got a pair they
want to sell?

Shimano do make two grades of platforms for SPD - I
recently bought the tougher grade platforms here in OZ for
my 505's and they are heavy and serviceable. Trawl around
the Shimano Website look for service diagrams for SPD's
they are listed there

At a lbs I paid 3-50 and intended to use them for a
fortnight commuting in London, but they only lasted a few
days before they broke and fell off.No-where near tough
enough . On the Hammersmith roundabout-the-bus-station
system the car behind peeped at me, and fortunately I
checked before giving him the usual reflex response.He was
only concerned that my pedal had disintegrated.

You must have some old pedals in the garage.It only takes a
minute. You could buy a bike for £10 in the ad-mag.

These platforms have a Shimano Part number, SM-PD22, and can be bought from any Shimano dealer.
