  1. I've read nothing yet, my first impression is based on the uninviting heft of the tome, the same
    sorry sort of drawings that have been around since Counsilman, and the appalling blurry medium gray
    photos. I suppose the blame goes entirely to the publisher. Next to this monstrosity sits a tiny
    book I've just read, with the same number pages. There is simply no need for such large heavy paper
    to be used in a book intended for frequent use. The drawings are not only amateurish; they are often
    wrong, often showing poor elbow position (pages 124 and
    125). I will read it because of my respect for Maglischo, but it will take a while to get past its
    lack of appeal.

    I actually like the SF sketches better than those in SEF. They are more like Colwin's technique.

    It is a difficult choice. Use b&w photos that are accurate but blurred by the water, draw clearer
    sketches of the swimmers that may not truly reflect reality or spend a great deal of money on
    staging and reproducing clear underwater color photography.

    I have been thinking that tracing the swimmers from photos or highlighting the swimmers within the
    photos would be helpful.

    I was just responding to an email from someone that was going back and forth between the videos on
    my site and reading Swimming Fastest.

    That got me thinking. Do you think book buyers would feel cheated if Maglischo, Colwin, et al,
    referred to videos and sequences of good color photos on a web site?

    Mine arrived last night. Couldn't wait to get the kids to bed so I could start reading. So far I've
    learned three important things.

    1. No need to get supper strong tricep muscles by working out in the gym. (which is what I
    was doing)

    I was extending my arm at the end of freestyle, using my tricep muscle to straighten my arms. Wrong!
    Sroke flaw. Leave the elbow fairly bent, close to 90 degrees, even during the outsweep. Stop
    applying pressure on the water fairly early, about when the elbow pops through the surface of the
    water. This technique is counter-intuitive given all the emphasis on Distance Per Stroke. One would
    think that straightening the arm and pushing the water as far back as possible is the way to go. Not
    so according to this book.

    2. Think "upper arm adduction"

    That's the action of rotating your upper arm from above your head to your side. I think I've been
    sculling, or pulling my arm during the insweep with muscles in the arm itself. That's not the way to
    swim. You swim by letting your hand fall to catch with very little force. Your arm is now shaped
    like a boomerang. Now, sweep your upper arm in a semicircle towards your side. Like you're squeezing
    a balloon between your upper arm and your side. That will use powerful muscles under your upper arm
    pit - mainly chest and back.

    3. Don't be too aggresive with your catch.

    Don't try to actually get your elbow out in front of your hand as viewed from the side. This will
    put a lot of stress on your shoulder. From his pictures, he considers the catch complete before the
    forearm is pointing straight towards the bottom of the pool.

  5. You will certainly find many elite swimmers with non-terxtbook strokes but it would be mad for the
    majority of us swimmers to try to copy the idiosyncrasies of the likes of Hackett, Klim etc. Paul

    Surely, from the many examples you cite, the majority of coaches do not interfere with strokes of a
    proven pedigree. I don't think that means that we should actively promote their idiosyncratic
    styles. What many coaches try to do is give their swimmers advice on how to improve their stroke eg
    better streamlining, more distance per stroke and more effective stroke rate. BTW, I am a loper
    myself but more as a result of my breathing pattern than any stroke advantage that I have
    perceived. Paul

    No, it isn't a hair style for swimmers. But it is a more plausible mechanism for extra propulsion
    than 'cheating the bow wave' :

    Maglischo describes suggestions by Sanders, Cappaert and Devlin 1995 that "energy accrued by raising
    the upper body was reused to aid propulsion or reduce drag." He writes, " ...when buttefly swimmers
    raise the head and shoulders out of the water during the armstroke, ... subsequent downward
    movements of these body parts back into the water start a wave-like summation of forces that results
    in more force being produced by the downbeat of the dolphin kick. ... The body wave should not be
    confused with wave propulsion."

    In *crawl*, one might raise up the upper body, then undulate the entire body to translate that
    downward force to the kick. Something like that might explain the four beat kick favored by
    asymmetrical swimmers like Dolan and Hackett.

    But I don't see much undulation in either of them after taking the arm stroke preceding their
    kicking on either side.

    This was even more interesting to me

    Chapter 3 Guidelines for Increasing Propulsion and Reducing Resistance - Wave Propulsion

    Maglischo talks about wave propulsion as a third propulsive phase in breaststroke and butterfly, and
    then offers this provocative, but oddly familiar theory:

    "Wave propulsion appears to be caused by a wave of water that surges forward past swimmers just
    after they decelerate suddenly. Notice in fugures 3.20 and 3.21 that the forward surge attributed to
    wave propulsion is always preceded by a short and very rapid period of deceleration after completion
    of the propulsive armstrokes. Wave propulsion probably works in this way. When swimmers accelerate
    forward, they pull some water forward with them. Then, when they declerate suddenly, some of that
    water surges forward past them in a wave-like manner. This surge accelerates their bodies forward
    for a short time."

    "Wave propulsion is a classic example of transfer of momentum. Swimmers first transfer momentum to
    the water to the water by pulling it forward. Then, when they decelerate, some of that momentum is
    transferred back from the water to the swimmers, accelerating them forward Swimmers should utilize
    wave propulsion to the fullest extent possible, because it is, in effect, cost-free propulsion. That
    is, swimmers do not have to exert any muscular effort to accelerate the body forward."

    (When I suggested that the body might carry some water forward along with it, then use that moving
    water for propulsion, physicists on this ng compared it to Baron Munchausen's bootstrapping.)

    As a reader, I would appreciate the referrals. Imagining myself as the author, I might feel a bit
    possessive about *my* book.

    Maglischo and his editor follow a long tradition begun with Counsilman's first book of using
    decidely unprofessional drawings. It's not excusable. It costs no more to get basic informative
    illustrations of swimmers than to get cruddy ones that clarify very little.

    I would hope your videos and sequences are made widely available.

    I just ordered the Maglischo book today and it sounds like a significant forward step for him.
    I've noted the same phenomenon mentioned here and have found two focal points that help greatly.
    1. After breathing, focus on driving the high hip down fully. Focus on that almost to the
    exclusion of all else. When you want to swim faster, drive the breathing-side hip down faster.
    2. Also, imagine you have a bullseye target beyond the fingertips of the hand extended forward as
    you breathe (i.e. left hand when you breathe right). Picture yourself driving the
    breathing-side hand through that target as you enter.

    Terry, you seem like a really nice guy. And I've pointed out in the past a number of
    contributions that I feel you've made to the swimming culture. And I bought your book, your CD,
    your short-axis video, and I ALMOST bought your pool-side flip-charts. So I'm helping pay off
    those prep-school debts 🙂

    But I gotta tell 'ya, I may try the two focal points that you mention. Then again, I may not.
    Because if you're right, and trying to rotate quickly back to non-breathing side to get a hard, even
    pull on that side is the best (only?) way to swim, then what are we to do about Mr. Tom Dolan?

    You see most people already know that Tom Dolan is the greatest
    I.M.'er of all time. But some may not realize that in 1994, in addition to winning the 400 I.M., he
    was also National Champion in the 400 free, 800 free, and 1500 free. And in winning four
    National titles, he equalled a feat accomplished by the legendary Mark Spitz over 20 years
    earlier. Four years later, he did it again to become the first man since Johnny Weissmuller in
    the 1920s to win four events at two National Championships.

    So in a country of 260 million people, among those who can actually swim freestyle, tall, lanky Tom
    is damn near the best!!!

    So please look at the video sequence below to see the genius at work.

    Now back to your suggestions. You first suggest driving the breathing-side hip down faster. That
    would be Dolan's right hip. Please note from the video that not only does he NOT drive his right hip
    down quickly, he remains rotated on his left side at nearly 90 degrees (right hip elevated!) for
    most of his pull on that side.

    Your second suggestion is to drive the fingers of the non-breathing side hand through a target
    stretched in front of you. Instead, in classic loping fashion, Dolan plants his left arm in the
    proverbially pole-vaulters box. Which means it very quickly points directly at the bottom of the
    bottom, in nearly unbent fashion. Which is to say, he ain't punching his left fingers through no
    target in front of him.

    You say you've studied the videos of 10,000 swimmers. Did you ever study Dolan?

    You said in an ealier post that you weren't really a scientist. That implies that you feel that the
    sublte nuances of a swimming stroke may be something which we can't analyze, hypothesize on, and
    understand. Others that post to this site disagree with your assessment. Tom Dolan's style and
    others like it have been discussed here at great length. Hypotheses have been put forth as to why it
    is empirically so effective. Your notions about remaining stream-lined and dart-like all make
    perfect sense. But what are we do with Dolan and others that swim like him? Would you have us
    disregard the data of his swimming prowess?

    The loping technique has been described in great detail by Larry many times. But I feel compelled to
    add "my 2 cents", having now used the style for a few months.

    In my opinion, the maintenance of momentum using arms alone may explain the greatest advantage of
    the loping style. You may note from the video that Dolan doesn't even kick every other cycle.

    In "Swimming Fastest", Maglischo has countless graphs that depict two pieces of data over time - the
    swimmers velocity and the position of their arms. And time-and-time again, the good swim doctor
    points out on the graphs that the swimmers forward velocity decreases while their arms descend to
    catch on each side. And that's obviously because there's little to no propulsion at that point in
    the stroke. To swim otherwise would put too much stress on the shoulder.

    Well, Maglischo has a PhD and has been a swim coach for 37 years. But maybe lopers solved the lack
    of propulsion and shoulder stress he talks about, and somehow, over that nearly four decade long
    career, he somehow missed it. Because I'll bet you anything Dolan's swim velocity curve doesn't look
    like the ones in his book. Dolan keeps his arm straight (no shoulder stress) and gets propulsion by
    immediatley diving for depth.

    He trades efficiency for time!

    His straight left arm WILL uselessly push some water towards the bottom of the pool. But, unlike
    some of the competitors on either side of him, who are punching holes in imaginary targets, and
    patiently waiting for their catch, he will IMMEDIATELY get some propulsion on that side.

    And the fundamentals of his loping style have been explicated countless times before by our own Dr.
    Weisenthal. And the similarites of the style among the various practictioners as well as the
    differences has also been discussed at great length.

    And yet you persist in calling it in idiosyncratic.

    I'm not religious, but even us heathens must go to the good book from time-to-time. And it's late,
    and I do feel moved by some (swimming) spirit. So I end with Jesus Christ from Mark 8,

    I've been looking at Tom Dolan quite a bit. His backstroke is very asymmetrical. He glides on his
    left for a moment, left hand at his side. Doesn't do that on the right. He also lifts his head up
    when his right arm reaches into the water, and then puts it down. He also doesn't rotate equally to
    each side.

    I've tried head lift during backstroke a little myself. Like crawl loping, it seems to give some
    mechanical advantage to whichever side it is used on. I don't swim backstroke very straight, but
    when I lift my head during my weaker left pulls, I don't hit the lane line like I usually do.

    I suppose they could include a CD. I've gotten lots of Comp Sci help books with a CD included.

    Of course, half the music mags I buy (CMJ, World Music, etc.) have their CDs pilfered right off
    the shelves.

    I suppose you meant that "he glides on his *right*, left hand at his side."

    I wouldn't call it a glide, per se. He makes his right entry with the back of his hand, so as he
    finishes his left sweep, he holds his left hand by his hip until he turns his right hand to begin
    the catch and downsweep. He seems to already have his left hand turned (as one is supposed to do),
    so there is less of a pause before making the catch on that side.

    With all respect to Dolan, I'd call that a hitch in his stroke due to a poor catch, but who knows.
    Maybe pronating later protects his right shoulder.

    Dolan is a different matter. He was an I.M.'er with asthma. For one or both of those reasons, he

    As far as Jane and Joe Schmoe, I suspect that may be a problem with the 10,000 videos you claimed to
    have studied. If we throw out the "Schmoe's", how many videos does that leave you with? A handful?

    If your program is not aimed at people trying to achieve the most speed, you probably should be a
    little more up-front about that in your literature. But I believe that much of your audience are
    triatheletes. Those are people gung-ho enough to want to do three sports in sequence. Don't you
    think they want to swim faster, and not just get comforable in the water?

    In my minds eye, when I lope in the pool, I see the Tom Dolan video clip from Donal's site. I'm
    sure a video camera of my technique would disappoint me tremendously, because it would be a
    pale imitation of the master. However, I do it well enough to be able to carry more Distance
    Per Cycle than most of the other swimmers in the pool. I'm sure all the people Dolan beat in
    his freestyle and I.M. races were training about as long and hard as he was.

    Dolan also got away with staggeringly inefficient flip turns bcz he was 6-6. Does his success in

    I visited my friend Jim Richardson (womens' swim coach) at the University of Michigan Feb 11-12
    and had the chance to observe Jon Urbanchek and his assistant Eric Namesnik at practice. I never
    saw them do any stroke coaching -- though there were countless opportunities to do so.

    You're attacking one of your own here 🙂 Tom Dolan attended U of M. His later coach, Rick Curl, who
    trained him for his World record performance at Sydney, said this about Jon Urbanchek:

    "I also want to acknowledge and thank Jon Urbanchek for his terrific support and training of Tom
    throughout his career. His contribution though the years has been significant. He and I have
    developed a tremendous partnership that has helped Tom to reach the status of the greatest IM'er of
    all time."

    constantly encouraged Tom to correct his technical flaws."

    Don't you think they tried various things? Your book and CD cost less than $50. Don't you think they
    could afford that? Don't you think they would have bought it and used it if they thought it would
    have made him faster?

    Well, if there is no requirement for body undulation, then *any* swimmer should be able to utilize
    wave propulsion simply by slowing down. Any glide phase becomes an opportunity for "free" propulsion
    as the water rushes from behind to carry you along.

    TANSTAAFL. I suspect it isn't that simple.

    My tentative proposal was that a swimmer may take advantage of this accompanying rush of water by
    using his forearms in propulsion against that water, since Toussaint says that the forearms are not
    moving relative to still water. Maglischo is proposing that short axis Breast and Fly swimmers, if
    they undulate quite a bit, may benefit after a marked deceleration phase.

    My objection to "cheating the bow wave" is that while some crawl swimmers do raise and lower their
    heads, they aren't really undulating and presenting oblique surfaces to the oncoming water. Simply
    placing one's head and chest on the bow wave doesn't put one in a position to "catch the wave" like
    a Fly swimmer that bends at the waist to put her upper body deep into the water.

    I also note that you promoted the idea that we must either maintain a high stroke rate or use a big
    kick for maintaining momentum and avoiding deceleration during the crawl stroke. Maglischo's wave
    propulsion can only take effect after a marked period of deceleration, as in the short axis strokes.

    Well, the odds are certainly stacked against you being right, Terry. If it was just one swimmer
    using this technique, then your choice of the word "idiosyncrasy" might be appropriate. But we've
    got Dolan, Hackett, Evans, and others.

    And with regard to Evans, look at what you are postulating. Janet's records in the 400m and 800m set
    in 1988 are now going on 15 years old. In those 15 years, how many thousands of women have chased
    them? What kind of a genetic "super freak" would she have to be to set records with that kind of
    longevity using a defective style? It just wouldn't happen, Terry.

    to go under 4:00 minutes for 400m short course. There's not a trickle of lopers out there, Terry,
    it's a tidal wave.

    Michaelangelo contemplated Sangallo's proposal for St Peter's in Rome, largely discarded it and
    designed a solution both more beautiful and more appropriate to the scale of the project. When he
    painted, or sculpted, or designed buildings, he did not slavishly imitate someone else's
    idiosyncrasies.

    If he had he would have been forgotten long ago.

    Dragged by what mechanism? Surface tension? Against what oblique surface is the onrushing water
    applying pressure?

    If a crawl swimmer slows down, the water rushes around and under him, maybe pressing directly
    against the soles of his feet.

    The surfers and their boards are all in front of the crest of the wave, not on top of it, and
    certainly not dragging half of their mass behind
    it.

    I've body-surfed enough to know that you've got to stay ahead of that wave. When it catches up,
    you're done, the wave goes by and leaves you behind.

    What is the water pushing against? Your kneecaps? Your protruding navel? Unless you undulate down
    and show the wave some surface area, the water will not propel you, though it may reduce the normal

    Exactly what was going thru my mind. I'm not sure I even make a bow wave. I sure can't seem
    to catch it.

    Obviously the majority of this conversation is out of my range of expertise but I'm
    wondering if other than anecdotal evidence, has there been any studies/models etc to prove
    one method over the other? If so how complete and decisive was it? As I see it, at the elite
    level, we are speaking of mere fractions of a second per cycle. In my mind this is, if not
    impossible, next to impossible to try and pin this to any one issue. Their are nearly
    infinite number of possible iterations with technique, training, race readiness, nutrition,
    water temperature, pool, sun, moon stars, and on and on that all may have some effect on an
    elite athlete at any one time. How is it that we try to attribute xx sec to any single
    issue. What about "I had a good day" or "I'm in the best shape of my life" or "I ate my
    Wheeties" If one could point to a study that said ALL or nearly ALL swimmers that following
    this technique to a T are faster than swimmers that follow this technique then emulating the
    better technique would be behoved. Swimmers are like snowflakes they all have there own
    technique. Yes we try to follow or imitate the best, however I'm fairly sure there are also
    great, swimmers, runners, cyclist that most would not try and emulate. In the end it is not
    about bow waves and body balance its about finding out what works the best for you. Whether
    I learned through TI or through a Loping master coach is meaningless, I still must adapt
    what I'm taught to my own abilities and idosynchrosis.
