It's not generally appreciated that we are two people, the one who

I thought that the determination to ride Many Miles before sunrise was
something which the brain could only contemplate while under the
influence of BEER? Certainly I always find that when I wake up and
the influence of BEER has worn off the thought of riding Many Miles
    before sunrise is suddenly untenable.

I must put in a grant application for research into this matter...

If you want a bicycle, buy a bicycle. If you want something that
    folds, buy a deckchair.

Simon, I think you need to look at this web page:

Thanks Dave, but I actually get more of a sense of achievement riding
alone, although it's great to have companions and not have to worry
about food + drink, having to rely on my own willpower is very
    satisfying.

If you tried one I think you might find it was more like what you've
been doing than you imagine. On most BR rides food and drink is very
much up to the rider. It's not every event that has El Supremo
catering. Group riding is also optional, or maybe not if you get
dropped. I found Audax riding was not wholly like my preconceptions of
it when I started doing it this year.

Perhaps you had so much BEER that you can't remember how much BEER you
    had.

It can't have been /that/ much, coz I went to the cinema, cycled home 22 km
from Brixton and fixed the front derailleur on the mountain bike. Which
    still works...

The best way to confuse a Daily Mail reader is to tell it that
