M5 Seat Size?

Bill, Unless you have short legs and a long torso a standard seat should be fine. I have not
experienced recumbent butt on either seats. Longest ride duration on either is 100+ miles with very
few stops. The CF seat and the FG seat are the same shape and both IME seem to be equally rigid. So
weight is the only issue. I prefer the M5 and have ridden one on a Giro, Strada and Aero. Its a
firmer plant and in hilly conditions this can be important. The open cell foam is more comfortable
than it appears and is quite cool....however its a rough ride shirtless. The foam lasts about a year
and usually tends to deteriorate in the lower seat lip area. Mine is currently shedding in this
area. Seats are such personal preference things. I give my Bacchetta customers who want to check it
out an M5 CF loaner seat. So far two have elected to switch to the M5 and one has not.

Great question. I was just getting ready to post similar question.

I rode one of my fastest century yesterday (4:13) on my brothers brand new Strada. He has a
standard CF seat. Seat was fully reclined. All was well until last 20 miles. Got worst case of
Recumbent Butt ever.

What are options to improve seat comfort?

Really hope to iron out this glitch. Seriously looking to Aero.

There is a big difference

I was going to buy the standard size seat from M5, I had the chance to try out a standard size in a M5 shockproof, I am 6´5" and the standard seat was a nightmare after just a few minutes particulary in the shoulders, the seat is too wide to fit between the shoulderplates, but too narrow for the two Shoulderblades, the result was that one shoulderblade was on top and the other not, very unconfortable.

It seems that the shape of most bikes are exactly the same. different manufacturers just copy each other, I got a big seat from M5 which is a little wider, and just perfect for me, I only feel pain after long rides, (more than 70miles or more than 5 hours, non stop)

I am in the process to building a seat custom shaped to my back, using clay to get the shape just right, and then laminating carbon on top of it. lets see how it goes.

Anyway back to the subject at hand.

The foam lasts about a year? I'd say that depends on how many miles you ride. I've had mine since
the last weekend of March. A little over 4000 miles now, and I just changed the foam, about a month
or two later than I should have.

I had just gotten the bike dialed in as far as recline and seat to BB distance and handlebar height.
My old seat foam was down to a tad less than 1.5". I had forgotten how thick it was when it was new.
I was really surprised to see the new one was 2" thick. Now my seat to BB distance is too close
again. Think I'm going to leave it alone and hope the foam compresses a bit pretty soon.

Anyway, I'd say the useable life of the foam is about 3000 miles or so for me. As they say, your
mileage may vary. Wonder if rider weight is the main factor influencing how many miles you can get
on the foam? Have to say that it is more comfortable with the new foam.

George, I have over 4K on my Aero and its been over a year. My milage is way down this year since
the weather has been so wet here in MD. My original foam was 1.5" the new foam is closer to 2". I
have several seat foams hanging around. I'm going to replace mine with a 1.5" one.

A Bacchetta dealer can get you an M5 seat with the necessary hardware. It attaches to the
delrin seat clamp and away you go. Be prepared for sticker shock on the price of the seat and
attaching hardware.
