  1. Hi,
One of my bikes has developed a bit of play in the crank. It's a 2000(ish)
LX crank and the 'spider' that the chainrings bolt onto can now rotate a few
degrees. This happens when going from accelerating to braking on the fixed
    hub.

I was wondering if the spider went onto a spline or was just held tight by
the lockring. It's not a huge problem but I wanted to know if it would be
worth rebuilding it to fix it without pulling it apart first.

    Cheers,
    Duncan.

  2. Pull the crank and figure it out,in other words your
get a better look at really whats up.

Your chainring bolts and nuts are loose. You may need a tool made out of
stamped sheet metal with a little 3mm portion bent 90 degrees at the end.
It holds the nuts on the back side of the spider as you use a 5mm hex to
tighten the bolts on the front side. Any LBS should have it.

On the other hand, you can try tightening them yourself without the nut
holder, because sometimes the nuts stay in place while the bolt smoothly
screws in. If the bolt keeps spinning around, though, stop and get the
    tool.

That was my second guess after thinking the sprocket locknut had come loose.
It is actualy the spider rotating relative to the crank as they are seperate
    pieces.
I'll be pulling it apart next time I switch back to freewheel so hopefuly
    I'll figure it out then.

I had the same thing happen. It's splined. I was able to dint it with a
hammer and punch all around to tighten it up until I replace it with an XT
    (bigger splines).

I just had a go at dissasembling the crank today. I couldn't get my
c-spanner around the lockring and gave up trying to undo it with a hammer
and screwdriver. I figure if the lock ring is on that tight it's not going
to undo itself. I guess it'll just be rocking back and forth on the spline.
