This isn't in conflict with my assertion, which is that they wouldn't win a Sr2 national
championship. They might win a Sr3 national championship. But maybe not.

WRT Andrew's argument -- clearly the Sr3 field lacks depth. But so does the women's field. I
showed data from the first races I checked, the Tour of Gila time trial and the Mt Evans
Hillclimb, which showed the TOP rider in the Sr3 field is comparable to the best of the women
riders. I stand by that data.

    Dan

I think it is. I think it means that top women would win a cat 2 championship. That would be really
intersting to see. In theory, these are open races and I would love to see LVM race in an open race
    like the US Pro race.

Can you show me a Cat 3 who would have gotten 20th at the Redlands prologue?

    thank you very much.

Were there cat 3's at Redlands?

    How about Pamona: scvelo.comresults.html

    women : Genevieve Jeanson : 32:46 Sr 3 : Justin England : 33:05 Sr 2 : Michele Bondi : 32:11 Sr 1 :
    Tom Danielson : 27:51

She's closer to the Sr3 winner than the Sr2 winner on what is hardly a world-class field.

(okay, so in this case the Sr3 winner would have finished 45th in the Sr1 race 🙂)

That time meant that she beat every single person, except 31 guys in the Pro-1 field, 3 guys in the
Cat 2 field and one guy in the 35+ field. She beat some big names in the Pro-1 race. I was cursed
with a cold anc could not race so I got a first hand look -- the weather was exactly the same for
    all races.

Let's put it this way. At the Pecos Foothills road race the weekend before, the 100+ Pro-1-2 field
lapped the women's race twice. Well, all the women except Jeanson. We never lapped her, and she was
riding lap times that were within a minute of what our entire field rode.

Do not diminish her results. She literally defies comparison at the moment. She is otherworldly.

  9. I am not sure how people are suggesting using photofinish to determine the hour record. A
photofinish camera looks at the finish line and records everything that goes over it. Although
regular lens cameras can be used, a true photofinish camera uses a slit lens so that the horizontal
aspect of the resulting picture represents what passed through the vertical plan. It is a picture of
the vertical visual against horizontal time rather then both vertical and horizontal visual as with
    a regular lens.

Since it is unknown where the finish is going to be until it occurs where would you point the
camera? I guess it would be possible to have a camera tracking the rider with digital annotation of
the time and markings on the track so you could show where the rider was at the point of the finish.
This would not be photofinish photography but would just be regular video. It would also require
markings that are not usually on the track.

The general practice for the hour is to not award the record unless the new distance is greater
than 1 meter longer than the old record, i.e. centimeters don't count. Considering that the
greatest source of error in measurement of the hour is in the measurement of the velodrome itself
that is probably a reasonable practice. Judging the position of the rider at the conclusion of the
hour can be done visually or by interpolation (the current "correct" method) and both will be
    accurate enough.

The final distance is a calculation based on the final lap time. Its odd, but if your speed
rises or falls in between the gun and when you next cross the line your official distance can
change. You can't let up when the hour expires because you can lose distance!

You could use photo finish equipment and get an exact measurement, but you would be re-defining
    the event.

I guess the person to blame is Henri Desgrange since he defined the event in establishing the
    first record in 1893.

    Other hour record trivia:
    - The record for exceeding the existing record is held by Jules Dubois who went 2.85 km further
    than Desgrange in 1894.

    - The first high altitude record was set in 1898 by American Willie Hamilton in Denver. He remains
the only American record holder, and was the last to do so at altitude until Ole Ritter went to
    Mexico City in 1968.

You guys have got to get some new stories. Actually my news feed went belly up. I am testing a new
one for my ISP. I have mixed feelings about the results. OK, of course that's great that Queen
Leontien got the record, but under old rules Marsal and Longo went further. I would like to see her
try it under the old rules to really see how her times would hold up against a much younger Longo.

    47.112km: Catherine Marsal (F), April 29, 1995 at Bordeaux
48.411km: Yvonne McGregor (GB), June 17, 1995 at Manchester
49.159km: Jeannie Longo (F), October 26, 1996 at Mexico City

50.065km: Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel (Nl), October 1, 2003 at Mexico City

The type of equipment that would be needed for the video option isn't worth acquiring for the very
few times that the hour record is attempted. Not only would the UCI have to spend the $$$ to acquire
the equipment, but they'd have to spend $$$ to train commissaires to use it.

Better to use the current method. Cheap, easy, reliable, and fair. All would-be record setters will
    face the same thing.
