lubricating for better or for worse

It's a bad idea given the other two options. Those will tend to dissolve
the grease that is already in the bearings.

I assume this is for unsealed pedal bearings?

Bad idea. Yo yo oil will dissipate or wear away quickly. Silicone
spray won't lubricate long. Neither are water resistant. If you must
get something right away and that is all you have on hand, I'd go with
the silicone spray. And then get proper bearing grease as soon as
possible.

Find some bearing grease. Either automotive or bicycle. Whatever you
can get your hands on. Best if it is waterproof grease.

The thick grease is there to lubricate, but also to protect the
bearings from water (rust) and contamination (dirt, grit).
Contamination will cause wear.

Sorry to thread-jack

The bearings on my DX seem to be leaking a fair amount of grease. The
other day I realized I can hear the ball bearings rolling as I spin the
wheel in the air, whereas when new, I couldn't.

Is this a problem? Is there a seal broken or something? Do I need to
lube them?

I've never ridden it hard, if that makes any diff.

Which bearings on the DX? Pedal bearings or the hub bearings?

Unsealed pedal bearings need regular maintenance, especially if ridden
outside in the dirt and wet.

Hub bearings can last a while. It all depends on the conditions you
ride in. I generally replace the hub bearings on my muni every year
cause the muni gets ridden in wet and dirt. I could go longer than a
year but I just do it as my yearly maintenance overhaul. The hub
bearings on my Coker and other unis go years on a set of bearings.

If the hub bearings are making noise it could also be due to having the
bearing caps on the frame tightened too tight. They don't need to be
very tight. If you're using a screwdriver style nut driver just keep
you finger tips on the nut driver (don't make a fist on it) and tighten
just till snug. If you use an allen key then same general rule. Keep
just the finger tips on the tool and tighten just till snug.

If you really cranked down on the bearing caps it is possible that a
bearing has been damaged, actually breaking a ball bearing or breaking
the race that is inside. The bearing will make noise and be very rough
to turn if that is the case.

The hub bearings.

I'm thinking the noise is from most of the greese leaking out, since
they never made that noise before.

They definately aren't too tight. I always tighten them until I notice
the wheel to not spin as easily, then loosen one of the bolts on that
side 1/4 of a turn. It says the max is 15 in/lbs, I haven't measured
it w/ a tourque wrench, but I'm sure it's less than that.

I don't ride it hard or ton's of miles.

Also I have a big problem w/ the cranks constantly loosening up.

I have Qu-Ax 170's on it.

It seems like once a month at least one crank loosens up. To keep them
from loosening right away, I tighten them down to 65 ft/lbs w/ blue
locktight and this last time I used the red ("permanant"😉 and the right
crank has started to loosen after 4 rides. I stripped a crank bolt
trying to get it too 65 #'s and cost me $100 to fix and 3 mo of no Muni
(I managed to catch 3 other bolts before it was too late).

The grease isn't going to leak out unless you ride in wet conditions or
riding in snow.

What generally happens is that the bearing eventually gets filled with
gunk and dirt. The dirt makes the bearing spin rough and eventually
not spin well at all. The grease is still there, it's just mixed in
with a lot of dirt.

I'm going to take a guess that something may have broken inside the
bearing or that a large piece of grit has managed to get in there.

You mean the top and bottom parts of the bearing holder touching?
Certainly not. They would have to be extremely over tightened.

I've never ridden in sand or snow, but I have ridden in the rain about a
dozen times. I've never ridden in puddles, or dropped it in water.

I guess I'll order some bearings and a puller then ride w/ the
originals until the wheel gets harder to spin.
