  1. I talked to my doctor yesterday, who informed me that my LDL cholesterol level tested at 112, an
unacceptable number in her opinion. So she wants me to start taking some sort of cholesterol-
lowering medication. I would prefer not to. I've had Type 1 diabetes for some 40 years now, and
otherwise I'm in moderately good shape -- though I live an intensively sedentary life and could
stand to lose some pounds before I started to look anorexic. Question is: has anyone here managed to
lower cholesterol levels by systematic weight loss and/or exercise? I have a strong averstion to
exercise for its own sake (I'd like to find something to do that accomplishes something) but I might
put up with it if I could avoid taking pills. (Insulin I don't mind, since that's replacing what's
missing in my body with nearly the same thing!)

Any horror stories about bad side effects of cholesterol medications?

How could you be in moderately good shape if you live an intensively sede= ntary life and are
    overweight?

Yes. Also exercise is almost the only way to increase the good cholestero= l, which helps eliminate
    the bad cholesterol.

Are you joking or not? You must be joking. Exercise does accomplished a l= ot.
    1. It improves your all-round health
    2. It helps with sugar control by having better muscle tone.
    3. It develops a stronger and better functioning heart, which is so impor= tant for a diabetic.
    4. It helps in losing weight.
    5. It helps prevent insulin resistance even for type 1, who can develop i= t as he/she ages.
    6. It helps with neuropathy by getting better blood circulation.
    7. It helps with high blood pressure

How much longer do you want I continue? I can speak about having stronger= bones, being less tired,
happier and so on. Even taking 1 or 2 of the above shou= ld be enough for any diabetic to start an
    exercise program.

I still think you were joking. Maybe you were not. True it is your own bo= dy and your own future
    complications from your own diabetes.

Some cholesterol medications may make sugar control much more difficult.

Peggy, You wouldn't happen to be looking for an excuse not to take (probably) a statin would you, in
case you don't get the answer on exercise you want? Naw, I am sure your health is more important to
you than excuses and rationalizations. Right? er Right?

what are the numbers (total chol., LDL, HDL) from your most recent lipid profile?

taking meds (with few exceptions (like insulin or thyroid T4/T3)) invariably has negative side
    effects. 🙁

I know you didn't like what Françoise said - but she's right. However, there are some side effects
to Lipitor etc and I can understand your desire to minimise med use. I take Lipitor 20 with no side
effects, but that is just me. I am also seeing my doc next week to suggest I discontinue, because I
have successfully reduced my triglycerides and LDL and increased my HDL. See my sig.

I would be attempting to change your menu to improve all aspects of your health, not just LDLs. For
example, in the same area, what are your other cholesterol and triglyceride figures? The simplistic
answer IMO is eliminate trans fats, minimise saturated fats and, as you are overweight, don't
    replace them with something else.

And get up out of the chair as soon as you read this and walk around the block. Exercise doesn't
have to be boring and strenuous. I swim some laps each day; find something you can enjoy or just
park further from the entrance to the supermarket. But start.

Sounds like great exercise; I presume this is part of the defence of the American Way, and you can
run faster than a speeding bullet?

I occasionally chased them in my cab-driving days in Melbourne, but only when they were on foot and
    I was in the cab.

Having more muscle would help you survive a heart attack better, not to mention major trauma.

Ask any paramedic if excess weight in a health crisis doesn't reduce your chance of survival.

    Quoted message said:

    Yes.

Dropped from 288 to 263 by diet alone. Now, I've stalled with diet, and must exercise. Ugh. Do
    it anyway.

Exercise did raise my HDL-C by 10 mg/dL which got me from a 5% chance of dying from heart attack and
a 10% chance of having one (in the next decade) to 3% and 5%, respectively. I like increasing my
    chance of living longer.

    Quoted message said:

I have a strong averstion to exercise for its own sake (I'd like to find something to do that

    Commute by bicycle?

If you have hills to deal with, consider an e-bike to help you over them.

If you have urban traffic to deal with, an e-bike helps you get up to speed quickly and allow you to
go fast enough, quick enough, so you can "hold the lane" without other drivers being angry at you
for slowing their commute by .02 seconds.

If you already use mass-transit, walk to the next stop this week, and two stops down the next,
    and so forth.

Add NPR Morning Edition or All Things Considered, Books on Tape, or Audible for books on an MP3
player, to give your mind something to do. I have a very busy mind, and found the thought of
idleness abhorrent, which held me back from exercise. Adding those to a player with sound-cancelling
earphones or a sound-cancelling headphone set makes exercise more enjoyable, and helped me into the
    mindset where I would exercise.

Yes, but not in the same way. The peaks and troughs (which result from administering insulin
externally) in blood glucose result in more damage to your cardiovascular system than the natural
method. To compensate and live longer, dial up the exercise accordingly.

Just read the supplements for the drugs.
