How waterproof are they with the attached "All Weather Cover"? This
doesn't in fact look like it would be very waterproof.

HI,

I've used 2 smaller versions which don't come with the cover. I've
been impressed, and they've taken good care of my little digitals.
They're not waterproof, though, and in heavy rain the camera will get
very wet.

If you or anyone manage to find a genuinely w/proof small, padded
camera bag then please post here - I'm still looking.

I have a Lowe Nova Micro bag - this is quite big, not really a belt
bag at all. I once tripped in a stream and fell on it, pushing the
entire bag (with camera) under water. It was underwater for a few
seconds, and partially under water for another 10 seconds or so.
The camera stayed completely dry, no water got in through the zips
at all. I was quite impressed. Don't know how it would stand up
to hours of drizzle though - I found it a bit big to carry around
and now tend to keep the camera (Nikon 995) in a drybag inside
my rucksac.

Berghaus make something called a Dry Pocket which is of dry-bag
construction with a folding top. It claims to have a full
waterproof closure, and is intended to be clipped on a belt.
Unfortunately my camera's a bit too big to go in comfortably
so I haven't tested it under rain. Worth a look, though.
There's also a version with hard sides rather than padding.

for the uninitiated, are natty little placcy bags with tie handles.
They are also about as waterproof as it's possible to get...

Hmmm... I might look into that, but I suspect it could look a little
odd hanging from my waistband! 🙂

In the pouring rain, who on earth cares? I tend to take a few nappy
sacks out with me in my pack now, even though my children are all beyond
that stage. They (no, not the children) can be tied up fairly tightly
and more or less airtight at that, so are lighter to carry around than a
shovel... They're also useful as grubby underwear and socks bags for
those occasions when a change of clothes has happened. The best thing
about them I reckon is that they're versatile. I wouldn't want to use
them for food, but they're cheap (I often find them in my local £ shop)
and very light (the box they come in probably weighs more than the
contents) and disposable. I doubt if they're biodegradable, but you
can't have everything.

I have one (not sure which model) which I use with my Olympus C-740. I
don't recall using the cover in serious rain, but it looks to be made of
waterproof material (it doesn't need to be breathable after all). The
elastic along the edge means it does enclose the pack pretty well.
Obviously it is not going to protect the back of the pack though.

The double velcro belt fixing on these is what sold it to me. It is very
secure and means you can attach it without undoing your belt.

There are in fact camera bags that are to all intents and purposes
completely waterproof, at least in the heaviest rain as opposed to
actually being submersible. They are made by the same firm (Ortlieb)
that makes a leading range of waterproof bike saddlebags.

I'm asking about the Lowepro's only because I have not been able to
find an Ortlieb locally that is of the right size for my camera. The
Lowepro's are easily available.

I use the small non-waterproof one, and it's fine, even vaguely
waterproof for short light showers. In heavy rain I just put it in my
rucksack!

They should be pretty waterproof, although you couldn't submerge them!
The waterproof cover is pretty much the same as the waterproof rucksack
covers you get with some rucksacks. It's basically a totally waterproof
piece of material that covers the entire case except for part of the
back. The zip is completely covered.
