I'm looking for a new commuter bike that doesn't need too much maintenance. I live in a mountainous region of France and do about 150-200km a week year-round, and I'm tired of my weekly maintenance routines. I cycle regularly in snow and rain (I use Nokian snow tyres when it's really bad), and sometimes on rough surfaces (not off-road, but on reasonable surfaces that quite often have gravel, mud and a few potholes).
I'm looking at the Ridgeback Flight 04 because it has the Alfine hub gear and disc brakes: I'm assuming this is a good low-maintenance / performance ratio setup that I can just wash down once a week. Am I right? http://ridgeback.co.uk/index.php?bikeID=94&seriesID=50&show_bike=TRUE
Unfortunately I will have to jump in and buy this bike over the Internet with never seeing it or trying it - my local shops simply don't stock such hybrid bikes. I'd really appreciate any comments on:
- this particular bike;
- maintenance issues with disc brakes /hub gearing;
- suitability of 8 speed Alfine ratios for hilly conditions.
Thanks!
