  1. After a serious illness I had extremely low hemoglobin and
iron. After surgery to remove the bleeding polyps, some four
months later, my hemoglobin is back up to where is should
be, but my iron levels are still only 20% of normal.

I'm taking 1500 mg iron supplements (ferrous gluconate-
3x500/day), and have been for the four months. Is there
something else wrong or will it just take a long time to get
back to normal. My initial reading was "below measurable
parameters", now it is 14 (norm being 50-70?).

    Thank you.

If you have a normal hemoglobin .. you have enough iron ..
by definition .. JUST enough iron ..

You plan on storing iron for future use .. do .. ya ..

  3. Well, that was my question:

If the doctor told me that my hemoglobin was within normal
range, but my iron levels were not, does this mean anything
is wrong, or is that a contradiction, or is it possible to
have enough iron to return a normal hemoglobin result but
still be below the normal range for iron?

    Thanks

  5. Thanks for the info, but all kidding aside I'm still
confused. My doctor told me that my hemoglobin levels were
back to normal. Then he said my iron was at 14 - the norm
being 50-70, and that I should continue to take supplements.

From what he told me I gather that my levels are below
normal. I take your comments to mean that I'm ok.

Can you help me reconcile these positions.

    Thanks

The body has several ways of storing iron, several
different reserves. If iron is being lost to bleeding and
not being replaced effectively, the various stores are
depleted to keep the iron in the circulating blood at the
    best level possible.

You can imagine this like somebody's financial condition. A
person will keep enough money in their pocket for day-to-day
needs, and store the surplus in e.g. a savings account, a
term deposit, and less liquid assets like real estate. When
the pocket gets empty, it will be replenished from the bank
account. If the person is making more money than they spend,
they store it in the bank or other investments.

If the person starts losing more money than they bring in,
either because they lose their job (low input from diet) or
have large new expenses (bleeding) they will use up money
from the bank accounts and may have to sell their house or
jewelry or other assets. If they have a lot saved, they can
lose a lot, even without income, before they end up unable
to pay rent or buy food.

You're in the position of someone who lost almost all his
savings and assets. Although you're doing okay right now,
with money in your pocket for day to day expenses, and a
little in the bank, you aren't back to where you were
before. If you want to rebuild your reserves, you'll have to
keeping earning more than you spend (keep taking
    supplements) for a while longer.

"ironjustice" believes that all the world's ills, from
autism to xenophobia, are caused by too much dietary iron
from eating meat. He believes that if you keep yourself on
the raw edge of anemia, you'll live forever. I think he has
some kind of psychic or religious agenda behind this belief.
I suggest that your doctor has a better understanding of
    these matters.
