  1. OK, let me try this question on the group. I'm just completing Phase I of
South Beach Diet (lost 9 pounds thus far). I am an avid cyclist, averaging
    about 125
miles per week, 3-4 rides per week. At least one of these rides is
"intense", meaning that you're at 60-80% of Max Heart Rate for a majority of
the ride. I knew I had to shuck some pounds - so far so good...

Since starting SBD 2 Sundays ago, I have used only plain water to hydrate.
I had gotten to like GatorAid pre-SBD and can down 70 oz or 2 L of the stuff
in a couple of hours. GatorAid has 13g sugar in 8 oz (I mix it from a
powder). So, I think, I'm stuck on the horns of a dilemma: Do I just drink
plain water and be faithful to SBD, or should I just use the GateorAid to
support the exercise that I do.

    What's your opinion?

  2. 'Aides' in general are all marketing hype. I have ridden 5 to 7 half-metric
centuries per week (150 - 200 miles/week) for some years now and in
90F+/90%RH+ conditions using water only. For the last few years, watering
only before and after my ride. My current stats are 55yo, 74", 205#, 60RHR
100/60 PB with a bit of postural syncope. YMMV

  3. Doug - Interesting... Seems to go against the prevailing wisdom (most of
which may be driven by profit, I agree). Let me go back on something you
said - you siad "watering only before and after". Am I reading that right,
ie, you take no hydration during a session? How's that working out for you?

    I am 57, 206#, 73" and I don't know my RHR nor do I understand what 100/60
    PB is.

  4. I have been training for a century ride and I don't drink anything but water
and am on LC. If I go on a really long ride I may eat a banana or cliff
bar, which isn't low carb, but other than that I don't. I rode 42 very
hilly miles the other day on low carb and water. It was no problem.

I don't care for sports drinks very often. When I ride 60 tomorrow, I may
have some, but that is because it is probably free.

I think you should stay on you South Beach Diet, until you are the weight
you want to be. You will lose pretty fast since you are working out.

Just dilute the Gatoraid by at least half again from what is recommended.
IOW, drink the same amount, but only 6.5 gms of the 'sugar' at one time.
It's OK to consume glucose during exercise, and if you are just careful not
to eat any fatty foods within 2-4 hours, you won't defeat the purpose. You
probably won't need that much sugar, though, thus a good reason to dilute
it. Just an opinion, b/c you have to experiment and find your own 'answer'
    to these things.

    need to pick it up.

I'm not sure it would be applicable to someone who is taking insulin. You
didn't mention if you were insulin dependent. What is your weight and your
    goal weight?

Check ASDLC for opinions and experiences from other diabetics of the same
type as yourself would be my suggestion.

    Best of luck!

  8. Sorry. Should be BP = blood pressure.

Certainly against prevailing breeze of opinion. My (political) dot.sig is
"The conspiracy of ignorance masquerades as common sense."

My 'bent doesn't offer any convenient water-bottle location and I just got
out of the habit. Usually I have the opposite problem - can't ride past a
blue-box (porta-pottie) or even a tree without stopping to 'water' it.

On typically long days touring (100 - 180 Km) I'll take a liter or more at
rest stops. And I practice 'pee one - drink one'

  9. Wow! Hats off to you. I don't think I'd be able to make a ride that length
    w/o something.
Thanks for your comments though - it gives me something to anchor in.

  10. Fine Curt - I probably should have consulted with my MD before going this
route but... I got very used to Gator - and - it was a lot cheaper than the
powders/concoctions available at the bike shop too. I don't really notice
much difference between using plain water and GA - I still get dropped on
Monday night! Oh well, need more miles I guess. I believe you are right
though because 10 pounds in two weeks is fairly good for me. Am trying to
achieve a better power to rate ratio so I can climb better. I'm at 206 now
and headed toward 184 - 189 where I was five years back. I am going to stay
on SBD for an additional week over recommended Phase I.

    Thanks for your input.

  12. Thank God,
I'm not on Insulin. I have my doctors blessing. Been doing from Dec 1,
lost some, put some back on. I started at 270 and hoping to be at 200 by
Christmas. After 5 months I got bored and stated cheating. I am "trying"
to get back on "The Wagon". I ride 20-30 miles at a time and have three
bikes, Mountain/City with street tire and a 50 big ring. A REI touring
bike and a road bike. I keep the city bike here in Ontario, Ca. and use

touring bike for shopping at home.

Well, be aware that Low Carb weight loss usually only works well once. If
you gain back and then try again, it's only marginally successful for most
people. (some can do it a few times in my experience). In addition, once
you go on it, you might eventually be able to add a few more grams of
carbs, but if you just go back to junk foods, you'll gain it all back and
more, plus you'll have a much higher percentage of bodyfat and less muscle,
since you do lose muscle -and- fat. As they say, it's not a diet, it's a
    permanent way of life.

    -B

  14. I'm on LC too. I did 50 miles this morning and I had two bottles of Fruit2O
(sugar free) during the ride. However, I did take 40 g of glucose tables
before and during the ride, to avoid low blood sugar after the ride. I'm a
    type 2 diabetic.

What is it you need from Gatorade? You can eat morton lite salt to water
to deal the the electrolyte issue. Also keep in mind that heavy exercise
means you can tolerate more carbs than if you're not exericing, and still
    lose weight.

:::: OK, let me try this question on the group. I'm just completing
:::: Phase I of South Beach Diet (lost 9 pounds thus far). I am an
:::: avid cyclist, averaging about 125
:::: miles per week, 3-4 rides per week. At least one of these rides is
:::: "intense", meaning that you're at 60-80% of Max Heart Rate for a
:::: majority of the ride. I knew I had to shuck some pounds - so far
    :::: so good...
    ::::
:::: Since starting SBD 2 Sundays ago, I have used only plain water to
:::: hydrate. I had gotten to like GatorAid pre-SBD and can down 70 oz
:::: or 2 L of the stuff in a couple of hours. GatorAid has 13g sugar
:::: in 8 oz (I mix it from a powder). So, I think, I'm stuck on the
:::: horns of a dilemma: Do I just drink plain water and be faithful
:::: to SBD, or should I just use the GateorAid to support the exercise
    :::: that I do.
    ::::
    :::: What's your opinion?

Just dilute the Gatoraid by at least half again from what is recommended.
IOW, drink the same amount, but only 6.5 gms of the 'sugar' at one time.

I'm not on LC, and I dilute gatorade to about 50 - 60% anyway; full
    strength makes me thirsty.

I'm doing the Atkins thing and will follow this tread with interest. I'm
62, diabetic and try to ride 50 miles a week, I have slowed down and I
    need to pick it up.

Sugar 124, bp 125/70. Got married last week.

That will raise your BP <GGG>.
