I never cycled there, just drove, but it seems like an easy area with nice view: Bracknell forest (that's where Sandhurst is located). You can start at the Wonkingham train station, go through the forest, and maybe continue to Ascot and Windsor forest & park if you have enough time and energy.

You do realise it's the middle of November, so the adjective "lovely" might
be pushing it a bit ;-)

I'm not going to pick one, but my Michelin road atlas marks at least
seven roads as scenic inside the M25.

Officially of outstanding natural beauty are the Chilterns, the
Surrey Hills/North Downs and the High Weald. Generally any road
there is scenic, so long as the gradients are steep.

Reginald Wellbye, who used to be the guru of what is scenic, also had
a scenic zone extending ENE from the Chilterns (although with a gap
where the M1 crosses now) almost all the way to the Suffolk coast.
That was however, the lesser of his two grades of scenicity.

I should warn you, though, that Wellbye also liked seaside towns.
Either they were prettier then, or his tastes were different from
mine.

got to be either the Surrey Hills or the Chilterns;

there was a Surrey Hills route on-line but can't find it: but a slightly
shorter version would be:

Box hill station near Dorking-Ranmore Common-Dogkennel green-Sutton
Abinger-Peaslake-Pitch Hill-Ewhurst-Leith Hill-Coldharbour-South
Holmwood-Brockham-Betchworth-Pebble Coombe-Box Hill and back down the zig
zag to the A24 (tunnel under) then back up to the station, very hilly but
very scenic and quiet, not sure of exact distance but probably about 50.

In that vein, I would suggest a train down to Dorking then a circular
route (clockwise) via Box Hill - it's not the hardest of hills to climb
as the gradient is reasonably gentle. It's just a bit of a slog. And the
stunning view from the top makes it well worth the effort.

No, I didn't get lost! I just had a major phone problem at home :-(

Firstly, those two days 10/11th November were fantastic: clear blue
skies and no wind. So, they really were lovely days for lovely bike
rides!

First day, I did my 'new usual' ride: wander up to Richmond Park
(which is probably 10 or so miles away), two circuits round and then
back (I did notice circuit times posted here but mine were a little
off, of course, because I had to slow down for all those deer!). Only
did the usual because there seems to be alot of latency involved in
accessing posts via google groups and nothing had appeared first-thing
in the morning.

Second day, I plumped for MartinM's Box hill route. I'd been there
before but, [censored], it's hilly when you have to get around on
your own steam and at a certain pace! Anyway, I followed the route and
it was excellent. A few stops due to lack of leg power but lots to see
and very quiet.

I'll definitely do the other recommendations on sunny weekends and/or
when I'm sacked.

Did you ride out from London? I used to do Box Hill regularly when I was
living in Kingston. Lots of legbreaking hills around there, or at least they
seemed like it when I was young, foolish and riding on a bottom gear of
