It would seem to me that if she had rear-ended another car under the "couldn't see" circumstances,
she would have been cited as at fault. But it's looked upon as "accidental" if she hits a cyclist
because the sun was in her eyes. Double standard?

Here's something similar from Texas. (From the Washington Post)

Could have been us -- once again "if you want to kill someone use a car"

LULING, Tex. -- A car struck a group of high school cross country runners who had gathered to pray
on the side of a highway, killing one and injuring at least three others, police said. The accident
happened early Saturday as the 10 Luling High School students were about to embark on their
two-mile morning run, the Austin American-Statesman reported Sunday. The driver has not been
charged, police said.

I see no evidence of a double standard. A constant in both articles cited was that the cyclist was
*crossing* the roadway so perhaps a better corrolary would be, "If she had t-boned a car backing out
of a driveway onto the street we'd all be blaming the driver that was backing up for not paying
attention to traffic." Just a possibility...
