    No. Robby has better proportions.
BTW, he should have won in 77-79 as well...

I was never a kid to have "heros" but I definitly knew who Lou Ferrigno
was. I always thought he deserved more than he ever got. Strange, but I
never knew that there was so much animosity towards the man?

I'd guess he's no more psycho than any patron of this ng. Currently
having a pissing contest with his brother which probably puts him
closer to the statistical norm than to any manner of psychosis.

I always thought Lou was a nice guy, and I agree that he probably has
overcome alot because he is deaf. He also probably blames some things on
    being deaf.

Mike Mentzer, Sergio Oliva, and Lou Ferrigno all lost to Arnold in ways that
made Arnold seem larger than life, and those three all seem to have carried
alot of baggage due to losing to Arnold.

Moko might be commenting on the idea that Arnold orchestrated using a
dark background to pose before in order to diminish the Sergio
freakyosity for the judges. What at least one writer offered, by
telling that story, makes Arnold out to be larger than life. And, of
course, the well documented Ferrigno tale of losing to Arnold by being
seemingly psyched out is told again and again in the film Pumping
Iron. Mike Mentzer's reaction to being told he had a big stomach or a
fat gut certainly added to Arnold's legend.

(Hmm, maybe I should have competed. I'm taller than Arnold.)

That having all those previous Mr. O titles served him well?

That a statement attributed to Arnold just might be true? Arnold said,
iirc, that his concept of judging physiques is summed up by the
question "Who would you rather look like?" Yes, although many of the
other competitors outmuscled Arnold in 1980, Arnold was taller,
broader, and possessed more star quality than the others combined.

And then there's the rumor that it was stone cold rigged - "Vee vill

all dat stoff!" Or was it the promised _long drive off a short pier_
with Ted Kennedy as the chauffeur for the 1980 Olympia judges? If you
listen to the few 1980 Olympia tapes, you can clearly hear Maria
    saying, "I know a guy..."

    The world may never know.

In all seriousness, I wonder how both Mike and Ray Mentzer would have
seen their lives changed had Mike been crowned Mr. Olympia in 1980. I
wonder if Mike would have pulled a multiple O streak as others have
done since (and, yeah, before) that time. Would Mentzer still be
alive? And would a 1980 loss have damaged Arnold's star power and rise
to even greater fame and fortune? I doubt that Arnold would have felt
a hit. I believe that the judges may have cost Mike and Ray their very
lives or, at the very least, speeded their destruction along a bit.

I agree up to a point.
For commercial purposes, it was easier to use Arnold then Sergio *in the
    late sixties/early seventies.*

Mike, in the late seventies, [censored] Arnold off bigtime, by claining his
training system was superior-high volume VS low volume- and that Arnold
would be even better had he used it.

A few weeks ago, i downloaded Arnolds comeback. He wasnt even NEAR his 1975
shape, let alone his appearance 1n 73-74, when he was at his best.

Did he do such a thing?

Unfortunately, I forget where I read that, Pete. It could have been in
Education of a Bodybuilder or that unauthorized bio by Wendy Leigh or
another book... True Myths of Arnold Schwarzenegger: The Life and
Times of Arnold Schwarzenegger, from Pumping Iron to Governor of
California. I haven't read Laurence Leamer's book yet, but have
browsed it and, yes, he does include info on Arnold's bodybuilding
    days.

Anyway, I am almost certain I recall a statement attributed to
Schwarzenegger that he encouraged the posing room or area be changed
to one with a dark background during the O. He was seriously sweating
Sergio and the very real possibility of a loss. With the dark wood as
a background, Arnold stood out in great contrast while Sergio blended
in thus diminishing his overall impressiveness.

    Quoted message said:

He actually used a different background?

They both used the same background or area, but it helped Arnold while
hurting Sergio for the fact of less contrast.

Hmmm. There's also something about lighting bouncing around the inside
of my skull. Arnold manipulated the lighting so that Sergio was in the
shadows while he was lit perfectly? Regardless of my short and
longterm memory, Arnold was the king of self promotion and, yes,
    manipulation.

I saw a similar - or perhaps the same - interview or commentary by
Arnold in the DVD of Pumping Iron I mentioned elsewhere. I got it in
the mail and it was cracked, but when I watched the replacement they
had commentary by Arnold about that, his father's death and his
reaction to it, the Franco "bad adices" part, and also about the pot
smoking segment. Arnold has always been a politician.

Mentzer reacted violently, but no blows were landed. The author said
that Arnold had some smugness wiped off his face, though, by Mentzer's
anger and the threat of physical contact. Likewise Arnold was reported
to have been intimidated by Kalman Szkalak during another altercation.
The author said there was an angry exchange which ended with Arnold
sitting down rather than allowing things to come to blows.

Always. He's a genius in that regard as well as in many other areas.
If you believe what has been written over the years, he made his first
million from real estate and well before he made it big as the top
bodybuilder. He earned a degree while other bodybuilders were content
to relax on the beach. Arnold's where he is now, not because of anyone

Agreed... almost. Arnold did get some coverage as he was leading into
Conan the Barbarian. But I suspect he would have stopped in 75 if not
    for Mentzer's big mouth.

"Arnold won the Mr. Olympia title for a seventh time in 1980, but to
this day, many people still wonder why he came back." From:
    http://www.ifbb.com/contestresults/mrolympia/index.html

Why he came back? The publicity, of course, but also to rub it in
Mentzer's face that he could come back *at any time* and take back
what he (and apparently others) believed to be his title - Mr.Olympia
ALWAYS. Yup, Ahnuld über alles. ;o)

Intelligent, yes, but with the ability to overcome his own arrogance
and feelings of insult? I'm not so sure. And, if you believe the
    inteverview found at http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/mminter.htm then
you'll see it's obvious that Mentzer believed the IFBB was corrupt:

"The 1980 Mr. Olympia was definitely fixed. The promoter of that
contest was Paul Graham, a very, very close friend of Arnold's. As it
turned out, while the rules stated that individuals had to officially
enter their application to compete one month before the contest, the
IFBB bent the rule and let Arnold enter the day before! He waited that
long because by that point he knew who the judges were. CBS, who was
there to film the event for future televising, was convinced it was
fixed and discovered that a majority of the judges had either close
personal or financial ties with Arnold. Well, so convinced - and
[censored] - was CBS Sports that, despite the time, money and effort
required to send a film crew half way around the world to Australia to
film a sporting event, they refused to air that contest. As further
evidence, I suggest you view the video of the 1980 Mr. Olympia"
    /copy and paste

    http://www.fitwise.com/mike_mentzer_death.asp offers another Mentzer
    quote:

"We may be able to send a man to the moon, but when it comes to
recognizing the rightful winner of the 1980 Olympia, mankind is surely
    arrested in its development.''

While those quotes don't provide anything close to proof that
Mentzer's early death had anyting to do with him not winning the O, I
still wonder where his life have gone had he won? Covers, articles,
money, perhaps Heavy Duty Inc. would have moved on to be one of the

gyms, supplements, seminars, contests - The Mike Mentzer Classic?
