  1. So I have been doing a lot more mountain biking recently I have been
    averaging about 1 flat every other ride. The last 5 to 7 have been from
    thorns suck through the tire and into the tube.

    I'm running a Bontrager AC jones on the front wheel and a Specialized
    Team Control on the rear of my Trek 8000.

    The obvious answer would be to stop running over thorns. But then I
    couldn't ride the trails around here.

    So I was wondering if any of the folks out in internet land had any
    experience with some tires being much more resistant to punctures than
    others. Or used products like tire liners, or this slime stuff that I
    keep seeing references to (the way I see it, slime doesn't actually
    save me inner-tubes, but would just prolong the inevitable).

    I have tried running the tires at a range of pressures.

    Just wondering what the list's thoughts were on this.

    The heavier a tyre, the more rubber between thorns and tube, the fewer
    flats. I run the heaviest tyres I can buy, plus the heaviest
    thorn-resistant tubes, plus the thickest liners, plus Slime. I haven't
    had to patch a flat in the field in months. My tyres weigh a lot, but I
    don't care, as long as I don't have sit out in the bush patching a flat
    in the blazing sun.

    The blazing sun helps the glue dry faster. However, it's quicker to
    replace the tube and keep the patch kit only for the _second_ flat
    on the ride, using the spare tube for the first one. Then, patch a
    batch of tubes at home less often.

    I patched four tubes yesterday. It's quicker to mass-produce four
    sitting in a chair at a table on a perfect sunday morning with
    kittens running around than it is to patch one in the field.

    My experience with cats and bicycle maintenance is that the cats will
    take small parts and put them out of the reach of hominids for safe
    keeping (such as under the refrigerator). 😉

    Hmm...I don't think the garage door was open, so the fridge was
    inaccessible to the kittens. I was outside, see, as it was such a
    beautiful morning that I couldn't stand to stay indoors.

    The adults and two of the kittens aren't interested in any item that
    they've determined is not food. One kitten was playing with leaves
    and plants, and when my tubes were hanging off the table, she played
    with the tubes too. It was ultra-cute.

    I patched those tubes experimentally with a cut-up tube as patches
    and Elmer's office-supply rubber cement. I put a moderate amount of
    effort into doing it right; I skimped on effort when it came to
    cleaning the tubes really well and removing the ridges 100%. Two of
    the tubes had rubber cement leftovers from the last time I tried,
    and one slightly damaged, as I had dremeled the ridges off and
    hurriedly attempted the same sort of patch, which did not hold well.

    These appear to be holding well. I'm going to install them and try
    them out tomorrow, I hope. I may not have time to install them
    before the ride.

    If they work, I may experiment with pre-gluing cut-up-tube
    patches...and so on.

    And you can leave patched tubes inflated to see if they've been correctly
    fixed - especially if you have a spare rim and tyre lying around.

    You know, I was considering doing this, but I don't have spare
    _wheels_ on which to do it. Will an unbuilt rim work?

    Well, it hasn't fallen to bits yet. You need a strong rim tape; a plastic
    one will bulge out the spoke holes.

    Inflation puts a modest compressive load on the rim, but of course in a
    wheel it's under enormous compressive load.

    Disclaimer; the rim I use for this trick is a Weinmann Concave tandem rim,
    so it's jolly solid.
