What has happened to urc? It seems to have been taken over by a wave of argumentative nit pickers while the regular, interesting and/or informative posters seem to be fading into the background.
Its got to the point where I am seriously considering whether it is worth continuing to wade through all the raging battles to find something worth reading, which would be a sad end after 11 years and 13,000 postings.

You can also kill some of the proven *****s. To take two extremes, avoiding any (sub)thread starting with "Matt B" or "spindrift" will spare you a million lines of garbage for every worthwhile post you miss.

Some sympathy but, Sadly this is a malaise that seems to be spreading through the whole of usenet as web-based forums and message boards seem to be taking over. I wonder how many younger internet users even know what a newsgroup is.
I really value reading information in plain text and with proper threading; it's just so much more efficient than typical web interfaces. Since many message boards automatically cross post to newsgroups we also pick up more noise.
The answer can only be in our hands: use it or lose it. If we all refrain from troll baiting, nit picking and all the other irritants and concentrate on conveying useful information, then the signal-to-noise ratio can only get better.

Strictly speaking that ought to be "louse picking". "Nit picking" would be removal of the eggs.
