I've got Hayes HFX9+ disc brakes and Mavis hubs. Have just discovered tonight that the rear rotor
slops around on the hub because the diameter of the 6 holes on the rotor are about 1mm larger than
the diameter of the rotor mounting bolts. You can put the rear brake on and roll the wheel back and
forth an inch or more at the rim. The rotor has 2mm play and rotates against the hub. I can't see
that tightening the bolts will help. As far as I can see, what I need is new rotor with the holes
the correct size so that it mounts correctly in the first place. I'll call the LBS where I got the
bike in the
a.m. but has anyone got thoughts on who should take responsibilty for this little gem of a stuff up?

never have had loose rotors. Take everything apart. Clean the hub/rotor interface with alcohol,
apply blue loctite to the bolts and torque them to 55in/lbs.Mike

If the holes were the same size as the bolts you couldn't economically manufacture a rotor that
would fit together. There has to be some tolerance (a bigger hole) to allow for variation in the
manufacturing process. Tighten em up and go ridin'--

up?Perhaps your rotor bolts are longer than the tapped holes in the hub- do they bottom out before they
tighten against the rotor? All rotors have the slightly larger holes you mention. Still, they should
not be loose, like yours seem to be.Miles

way you should have the rotor moving that way, though, so get it checked out. Make the shop show
you WHY it is allowing play. Once the rotor is fitting properly, bolts correctly installed and
tightened, it should be AND STAY as solid as a rock. No movement ever developed on any of my
Hayes rotors, either the first set of wheels with Formula hubs, nor the second set with XT hubs,
for nearly 3 years now. I don't think I even used any loctite on them, either.

blue loctite locks - it's only on the very end of the bolts. The bolts don't bottom out. I'd guess
that it's just improper setup during the assembly of a new cookie-cutter bike. I'll take them off,
clean them and tighten them up and see what happens. Something that just occurred to me was that the
last ride was their first major downhill. Maybe the heat loosened the rotors up?

WestieHeat won't loosen them. Your first guess is probably correct, incorrect setup from factory/dealer.
Use a torque wrench to install the bolts and you'll never have a problem with them.BTW, I only use grease on bolt threads... never had a problem.

I learned the hard way.....properly torque anything with threads. I've got a ft-lb, and in-lb wrench

It is VERY important to use a torque wrench on rotor bolts. Too loose and you have Westies Syndrome
;^) and too tight and the Torx will strip out and the bolt won't come out without a fight (Marks
Syndrome). 55in/lbs holds fast and releases when you want it to. It's also very good practice to use
the torque wrench on other fasteners on your bike.Mike - Mark is a friend of mine, I help work on his bikes.
