I am sure there is a Chapmans Pool somewhere but as usual my memory
can't supply the location. OTOH when I was doing Finsthwaite Heights
(one of AWs Outlying Fells) I came across Roger height, Chapman House
and Chapman Brow Wood and near Hawkshead there is Roger Ground. AFAIK I
have no connection with any of them. My branch of the Chapman family
came from Great Yarmouth.

Actually I found it very tricky descending to the west from Houns-tout
Cliff. The problem was the mud, which IIRC had a sticky clay like
consistency and was extremely slippery. It quickly filled the tread of my
boots turning them into "slicks" and was so sticky that I couldn't kick it
off. A pair of walking poles would be very helpful, to help you ski down!

I think the story goes something like this. The Saunders in question came
from England and married some rich local woman. He subsequently became the
mayor of Tenby and was given some land on which to live. Later a new town
was established at the "foot" of his land, and was hence named Saundersfoot
(the town on the edge of Saunders' land). Or something like that.

Yes, an excellent viewpoint. I visited that spot at the end of my walk
around the area, but was only able to grab two or three shots before the sun
disappeared, but I was lucky to get those.

If you take the footpath which heads West from the CP it goes down a steep
grass slope which can be tricky. Part way down it joins a fence which can
help, but it is barbed wire which has its own problems.

There is an easy way however which is to take the track going N from
Renscombe farm which then curves round left and ends at Chapman's Pool.

As Paul notes, the first part of the path to Hounds-tout is wet clay (there
is a stream). I find it better to go up this rather than down.

If anyone goes here, don't miss out on going to Swyre Head, just to the
West, it has a 270 degree view of the whole area. I think it is the highest
point in the Purbecks, although someone told me that it was built up a bit
to achieve this. There is a permissive path from Rope Lake Head on the
SWCP.
