I've been using google earth plus for this but having trouble finding those
"detailed Australian street maps" that I can import into the googlescape.
Any idea where to get those for Qld? I'm almost at the point of grabbing a
Gregorys DVD and screen shotting a few maps to make a composite. Yep, tried
whereis.com but compositing all of the tiny maps with sufficient detail is
way too time consuming.

try sniffing around the electoral office website
they often have CADexported vector/eps files on there
which, if you have IllustratorCS you can open, edit and remove extraneous carp. Well, at least the VIC one does...

Google maps is basically dated satelitte scans.

To import maps, you really need to import each feature layer seperately.
so you'd have to break the map up into the various feature layers, which
usually need to be adjust to the base map (sat images)

My understanding of Google maps is that they provide the backdrop and
you can add points or a route (series of points) over the top.

I tend not to play with it because it requires major computer grunt and
is so slow. YMMV.

I'll let you in on a tiny secret. They are the same maps.
Sensis owns the lot atm, except for one or two smaller street directories.

What is really a shame is that some where along the timeline, they seem
to have reverted to older maps on whereis.

Any I don't want to be a narc, but make sure you do not infringe copyright.

A decision to include a few town maps in a bicycle guide book totally
blew the economics of publishing the book out of the water.
Unfortunately it had been printed and the assumption that it would only
be a few dollars (Say couple of hundred $) for a licence was way out of
wack. the bill was about $5,000.

Unfortunately, Australia doesn't have the US approach where GIS data
collected by the government can be acquired for the cost of copying
(since the tax payers have already paid for it). This explains why the
GIS industry is hugely dominated by the septics.

Nah, Google Earth not Google Maps. It's a rather simple process to
superimpose a street map or other image over the satellite image in Google
Earth and then (with Plus version) mark out routes by point & click. Image
opacity is variable as well. eg http://www.ozcableguy.com/googleearth.jpg
All I need are digital images of maps and it's a cinch.

Totally for personal use. Mainly so the Mrs knows where to start looking if

At one point in time, you could right click "view image" in
whereis.com, and find that the URL of the image actually encoded the
image size. Change the 400x400 or whatever to somewhere near
1024x1024 was probably the biggest we could get it to accept, and
whereis.com becomes not nearly so painful to deal with.

Dunno if you can still do...

I thought the transmit side was simpler (GPS -> tiny trax -> radio. I
understood there were internet gateways you could listen in on for the
computer at home to collect your pings.

Alternatively I guess all you'd need is a "programmable" phone with gps
to send text sms (1c on big pong) give location. Although this might not
be adviseable if the missus works out your rest stop is a local cake
shop with cutie behind counter {:-).

I use a money belt for that if I've got more than will fit in my jesey
pockets.

The link on Cameron's site to the NSW Lands department map viewer doesnt
work but you can find the Lands SDI Map Viewwer on their website if you
look - pretty incomprehensible web site to me but seems like you can get
free maps for private or non commercial use. Try http://sdi.maps.nsw.gov.au
and look for GIS Portal Toolkit Map Viewer. You can zoom in to your hearts
content. The NZ govt has a similar one I used to gete some topograhical
maps from for a ride over the Crown Range last year from Queenstown to
Wanaka- anyone done that? Fing cold at the top.

Another source of good maps is street-directory.com.au, if you want to say
illustrate a bike route. They have a decent size enlarged image.
