You can get a brand new Sora equipped bike for less than $650. It would include modern "upgrades" like a carbon fork, integrated 1 1/8" headset, etc... I'd say that's way to high for that bike. Sorry.
MSRP on an brand new Trek 1000 is $569.99. It's Sora equipped. Granted it doesn't include the "rare" Biopace 500 Exage crankset...

That vintage Cdale came with a CF fork,except some of the bottom end ones. Many current bottom end bikes still don't offer them. I would not necessarily consider an integrated HS an upgrade.
o man u guys are really helpful! I ride a jamis dakar comp 2002 mountain bike and Im trying to get into road biking. Definaltey something in the $700 range that is light but strong enough to take some Jersey road bumps. I like your recomendations so far! I think I'll stick with buying a new bike like you advise.
Anybody riding a Jamis Dakar as well? How do you feel about it? I put mine through hell on the dirt tracks and it rides like a champ. It's a dog on street though.

Yeah, good point. I was just looking a little bit at a couple of new bikes in that range and you're right, they do typically have alloy forks for the most part (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). Anyway,that's why I put the word "upgrades" in quotes. 😄
