Looking for Used Frameset in Boston

Perhaps try out Bikes not Bombs (http://www.bikesnotbombs.org) in
Jamaica Plain, it's a community-oriented bike refurb-resale-repair
type place...I think there might be something similar in Cambridge, by
Porter Square?

And yes craigslist is very good too, though people often ask rather
inflated prices for their bikes.

Hmm...the "new" incarnation of "The Bicycle Exchange" is on Mass Ave
near Porter Sq. 617-864-1300 (AFAICT, this is not connected in any way
with the original, gone-but-not-forgotten Bicycle Exchange in Harvard
Sq.)

There's also "Cambridge Bicycle", formerly known as "The Bicycle
Workshop" on Mass Ave between Central Sq and MIT. 617-876-6555

Isn't Sheldon from Boston, or nearby. Harris Cyclery is where he
works. Also, since god invented ebay, a lot of people stopped
advertising in the classifieds. There are regularly frames for less
than $300 with sl, slx, 531, ishiwata, tange 1, etc on ebay. I fact,
you can probably find a complete japanese bike with a 600 group for
less than $300. Japanese seamless db tubing is just as good, as
italian, and japanese bikes from the 80s had better finishes and were
cheaper.

If you want a modern frame, you can buy a brand new aluminum frame for
about $100 or ebay.
