Looking for 8 sp 105 STI's

wheels-<< My 105 8 speed shifters went out on me. I've check
a couple of places and was told that they are no longer
made. >><BR><BR>

My supplier still has these, NOS but for the price($250) you
could get Campagnolo 9s shifters and rear der, a shimano 9s
cogset and chain-

I think Modolo Morphos will work, although they're expensive
and their quality is questionable. See:

If you can't find replacements (try ebay), you can upgrade
to 9 speed with only new shifters, cassette, and chain. Your
derailer and crank are compatible.

Shimano still makes 8 speed Sora. I see them on ebay quite
often for under $100. Try checking there.

I have mountain bike spaceing on the bike (it's an older
trek 520 touring frame with an XT hub). Will the 9 speed
upgrade kit work with the mountain bike hub?

Yes.

8 speed and 9 speed use the same hub spacing; the cogs are
closer together. That's why a 9 speed shifter won't shift an
8 speed cassette...otherwise you could just use 9 speed
shifters on your 8 speed cassette. As a result, regardless
of mountain or road spacing, if a regular 8 speed cassette
fit there, then a 9 speed will work fine too.

If your hub is 'older', was it _originally_ 8 speed? If not,
you may be able to just use 9 speed shifters on it; see "8
of 9 on 7" at: sheldonbrown.comk7.htmlOpen ↗ but
ignore the road bike spacing written there. If your bike was
upgraded like that, then 9 speed shifters are what you need
for your existing cassette. I'd say this is pretty unlikely.

AFAIK, and it's not entirely clear to me, mountain bike
spacing has always been 135mm OLD, and the wheels are just
built with more dish to accommodate 8/9 speed hubs (vs. 7
speed hubs).
