  1. I recently read in a back copy of one of the mags that instead of having to
carry loo rolls on long treks it is possible to use Vaseline - appropriately
smeared before performing the task for which one normally uses loo paper.

Apparently it works. Has anyone tried it?

During a dose of the sh1ts many years ago (in the Calanscio Sand Sea) I
discovered the relief brought by vaseline to a sore orifice. Since then
I have often used it to combat friction in times of extra regularity.

From my experiences I can say that it certainly reduces the residue but
I would not say it eliminated it. YMMV ;-)

No, but it slides off the shovel easier.

  9. You will still need loo roll, and vaseline could help open your bowles which
is something you don't want on a hike.

Hi, whats the problem with loo roll.... wouldnt it be lighter to carry than
    vaseline???

But it's bulkier and can get wet, soggy and impossible to use. I've not done
any weighing but I would have thought that a small jar of vaseline does not
weigh as much as a full loo roll.

Apparently the trick is to apply the Vaseline immediately prior to
performing the bodily function, so I don't see how it can adversely affect
the bowel movements which are surely controlled by muscular movement!

I carry about six bits of kitchen roll in my executive bum bag, which I
wear at all times outside the house, with my credit cards, mobile phone and
other such necessities. Multi purpose use.

I tend to do that as well. I can't imagine what I did before
I discovered kitchen roll. Car, minibus, camping, home,
work... Kitchen roll and baby wipes are your friends.

I don't carry a full roll and I certainly never carry the tube it
comes on. Also any paper you carry is wrapped in a good waterproof
bag. You wouldn't carry a map without a map case so you don't carry
loo roll without a bag to put it in.

Why not go with the asian technique of using water rather than paper
to clean yourself up afterwards? Use your left hand and keep your
    right for eating.

You'd be in real trouble if you needed a WHOLE Loo roll anyway.

A couple of yards or meters would suffice - enough for a scout troop I
    would have thought!

What is an executive bum. Is it some sort of managerial position?
