  1. I see this from time to time w/elite racing at middle and long distances in all
levels of weather and have never gotten a clear understanding of the purpose.
    Anyone out there know...ideas...wild guesses?

That's Keflezighi in the socks on Sunday in NYC. Is there any thermoregulation
strategy behind this w/calf muscles or something? Or is this simply purely a
rare personal comfort thing with no further purpose behind it? Certainly
can't knock it...the guy almost won & did walk away with over a $100K at the
    end of the the race.

Anyone out there run like this?

I do all my training in long socks but I run at night and it's the same
socks I work in, (grey on top of that) but my fashion sense keeps me
from racing in them. I've found in shorter runs (10k or less) it delays
the sweat from soaking the rest of the sock for an additional 1-2 miles.
In marginal to hot conditions your socks get wet because sweat runs down
the legs at a much greater rate than the feet sweat.

He thinks he looks "cute" in them.

  4. They might be pressure socks. I've heard that some think it helps keeps
excess blood from pooling in the lower legs. Sounds like a kooky idea to
me, just like those breathe-right nose strips.

I was having a good laugh at all the people walking around the expo on
Saturday with those strips on their noses. I must of missed the booth that
they were giving them out at. Were they training their noses?
(My apologies to anyone reading who was there and had their strips on.)
I wonder if they had their official ING nipple tape on too.

Some people wear compression shorts believing the notion, pressure
    helps.

Although he looked young he may have varicose veins. My doc suggested
these for me a few years back - I still use ankle high Wigwam.

They were demonstrating at the booth how to put them on, and a lot of
folks must have just forgotten they were there, they're pretty
    comfortable.

The company said it would pay $1 to some charity for each finisher who
    was wearing one.

I've been trying them out in the past month or two, not sure but they
    might help.

As for pressure socks, if Meb and Radcliffe both use them, there may
    well be something to them.

    Wild guesses, eh?

    Secret "naughty schoolgirl" fetish?

Still, doesn't quite make it without the pig tails and pleated skirt.
