  1. Can anyone tell me if you need to have a frame specially made for long reach calipers? I am looking at buying a NOS touring frameset for a long-distance all weather commuter but this frame does not have canti bosses... the seller claims it takes standard road calipers but it is a touring frame with fender and rack eyelets (and I intend to mount fenders)... there is no way to mount say a 28 (or even a 23mm) tire with enough clearance for fenders with standard calipers but I am unsure if the long reach calipers will fit or not.

What say you oh cycling sages?

Don't know you will need to try the brakes. The largest tire you can fit with standard brakes Short reach is 28c but with fenders and such...?

The use old long reach calipers are dependent on the clearance and the level of the braking surface with respect to the placement of the brake pads. You will have to test your setup.

  3. Yeah I know you can't get jack under standard calipers... but this is a touring frame with eyelets for fenders and racks, yet no canti bosses. I would have thought a safe assumption would be to use long reach calipers, yet the seller says "it takes standard brakes". I know the Surly frames specify use long reach calipers, so my real question is: Are frames designed specifically for standard or long reach brakes, or is there so much overlap that it is impossible to know without having the frame in hand?

Standard reach is 39-49mm, and long reach is 47-57mm. It's possible that the seller doesn't know there's a difference and thinks of all calipers as "standard brakes".

If you were a betting man would you guess that a touring frame drilled for calipers only would take long reach brakes? (when I say betting I mean paying $200 for a frame/fork from a old stock liquidator on ebay 😉 )

Most likely. Worst case scenario if it's a steel frame is that you have a set of canti bosses brazed on later.

It this is a full touring frame then it almost certainly takes long-reach calipers. What age is the frame? I would guess that frame is nearly 20 years old!

The bike seems to have come standard in 2002 with tektro dual pivot calipers. Harris Cyclery (http://www.sheldonbrown.com) indicates that these brakes come in long reach only.

So, I think your bike will take the long reach.

    Good Luck!

    Good, thanks for the info.

To be 100% sure, you could e-mail a Jamis dealer.
They have a dealer search feature on their website.

Believe it or not the stupid frame does take regular calipers. I am going to put a set of 28c’s in there and see how much I will have to modify the fenders to get them to fit. Kind of irritating since I have an old Litespeed frame I could use if I wanted to mess with the fenders enough to make them fit 😠 , but it is a nice steel frame for the money.

I'll bet that Litespeed frame is a lot lighter than the Jamis. But build them both up. You can never have too many bikes🙂
    Good Luck--Rob--
