  1. Nitto Technomic stems are beautiful and all, but they're kind of pricey, and no faceplate. Are there
any stems out there with a long quill and a removeable faceplate?

    Thanks,

    Kyle

Kyle: I have been looking for the same thing for my new custom Kirk frameset, without success. I
believe the only way to get what you and I want is from a custom framebuilder, who would make what
    you and I want.

As sidenote, if anyone know who can build a custom quill stem with a removable faceplate, please
    post it here. Thanks.

Maybe try to convince the folks at Nitto that their Technomic would be a bigger seller with such a
feature? While traditionalists can argue that 'improvements' such as threadless steerers have
serious drawbacks, I see no disadvantage (and only the obvious advantage) of a removeable faceplate.

2 bolts vs one. Closed face stem has more even clamping pressure and they seem to roll less in the
clamp. Closed face is prettier. One you know your stem size, what advantage the open face stem?

You are clearly not looking at this problem from the correct "operations" perspective. A removable
faceplate requires more parts, and everyone knows that more parts means more part _numbers_ to
allocate. More part numbers means more things to forecast, more things to acquire, more ink in the
    printer, less efficiency, etc...

FWIW, I really do like the ops guys - don't get offended! Also, I did test some threadless faceplate
and non-faceplate stems to failure. More info can be seen at:

Your link has no summary and no abstract. Your link describes only the testing method with no results unless the reader pays your fee, which you don't mention here. Your post is 20mm away from being SPAM, maybe less.

Kraig has contributed significantly to technical discussions around here. He also has written
articles about various tests (not stems, but wheel deflection, etc) which you can read for free at
bike.com. Finally, stems and more importantly testbed equipment and engineering time are not free
and he is not under an obligation to give the results away (who else even makes such information
available? That's right, nobody). I think your criticism is unwarranted.

To the OP, I don't know of a open faceplate stem which looks like a Technomic, but quill stems with
rise can get the bars up pretty high even when the quill is short. Especially if you are running a
long extension. The Salsa SUL is one example. There are other cheaper and (IMO) uglier welded
    aluminum stems as well.

I was looking for exactly the same thing, for a bike equipped with S&S couplers, where the ability
to quickly disengage the bars is critical for packing. I couldn't find one and I tried to order a
custom stem from Carl Strong, who told me that the availability of traditional quills to custom
framebuilders has already completely dried up. I finally settled for a stock Salsa stem that has a
normal-length quill but a 15 degree rise that helps me achieve a more comfortable bar height. Fred

  11. I'll just deal with the technomic. It ain't so bad, its just that I tend to be constantly ripping
apart my bikes (at least the one in question) and swapping parts, etc... so the faceplate is nice -
especially using bar tape with adhesive.

Indeed, but I think it would be more proper to explicitly mention that the results are charged for
in the news article. Otherwise, it simply wastes the time of those with a merely casual interest.

Your best bet is probably the Profile Design H2O. It's not an expensive stem, and comes in silver or
black, in 90 and 105 degree models. It has a vertical adjustment range of 6cm (compared to 2.5 with
most other modern quill stems, and 12.5 for the Nitto Technomic).

Maybe just get a quill to threadless adapter and use a open faced threadless stem.

The tallest mass-produced one I know is the Profile H2O which has a long quill (not as long as a
technomic) and is available in 105 degree rise and a wide length range. They are also not very cheap
($45?) for being a tig-welded taiwan aluminum stem, and they aren't as pretty as a technomic. But
they do work fine and have a removable two-bolt face plate.

All of them I've seen are really short.

Nashbar make a "comfort" stem, long quill, removable faceplate for $15, ugly, but it works. I put
    one on my wife's commuter.

They also carry a Zoom 90 degree for $20, I just put one on my bike, quill isn't all that long, but
the angle gives you some rise. I replaced a Nitto Technomic which fractured about an inch up from
    the locknut.

Well, the Nitto it replaced was pretty, but it cracked. Cracked stems are not a good thing, but at
least the binder bolt held things together. Welded stems may not be as sleek as forged stems, but
    I'm hoping they're stronger.
