  1. A fat ass race is one that is free, offers nothing but a marked course
and reserves the right emasculate or the female equivalent, to anyone
that whines even once. Most often they are in off season.

I did a 50k yesterday for a training run. 'Twas a 5k loop that you did
from one to ten times but only scored if you did them all. The 5k loop
is a two edged sword, you see you car almost too frequently but then
again to take another 3.1 mile loop lures you back out. Anyway I had a
blast not so much with the race but taking to foxy babes past the
Marathon distance for the first time in there lives. When they got to 7
laps I just egged them on with hell, one more dinky 3 miles and off they
went. One of the ladies was slowing big time for the last lap and we
simply slowed to her pace and all finished hand-in-hand. The big smiles
    on their face were priceless.

I expect some devilish email over the next day or so as delayed onset
rears it head. The longest run we had was 19 miles although it had 3,500
accumulated elevation. The course had two ups going and coming and we
did not walk a step. We ran about 4:53 and in position 4-6 but the time
was not important - finishing the distance will build their confidence.
We are going in a large group to do a trail 50k in March. Rock on!

Besides, I was in my jammies at 7pm, long before you asked.

If I LC'ed this race, I would in a body bag. For efforts like this LCing
is not just a poor choice but down right ignorant if not suicidal. My
main fluids de jour were Clip II, with a Slimfast, some Mountain Dew and
two salt caps. Need I say my post race carb came in a green can.

That's great when you've got a group like that and an interested leader
    like you to encourage them.

    with a Slimfast,

Speaking of slimfast, are you still able to get the original or are you
getting hit with this shift to Optima (take out the sugar and eliminate
about 40 cal, iirc). Our local Wal-Mart seems to be shifting to Optima.
There happened to be a sales person there Sat, and I made her aware of
the differences and that the original was much better for some people's
purposes - not that it made any difference to her, but at least I felt
better by saying something. I've started testing their Equate brand
which I didn't like before, but it tastes superior to Optima. I haven't
    checked the other stores yet.

Just curious Doug, do you think that it is impossible to, say, run a
50K under say 5 hours on low carb? I appreciate your opinion. Thank
    you!

After 15 years if these races and lots of experience with nutrition in
general, not just myself, I would candidly say it would be very
dangerous to even try it. That is like saying can I jump out of that
third story building and not get hurt. OTOH, with your bizarre
definition of a complex carb, I don't know what you think a simple or
complex carb is but it doesn't follow any nutritionist that I know.
Remember you are going to burn about 3,100(let's assume 100 per miles)
calories which is more than you store. So, why don't you tell me what
you would drink or eat to get through a 50K. For the average 50k the
    aid stations classically have:

Fluids - water, Sport drink(for a 50k this may be Gatorbarf - simple
    sugar), coke or Mountain dew.
Food - boiled potato with a dish of salt next to it, PB&J sandwich,
Potato chips, banana or oranges, cookies(fig newtons, chocolate chips,
    etc), M&Ms.

When you add "under 5 hours" especially for a trails, you significantly
raise the bar to the top 20% for an easy 50k.

Since I go through a lot of slimfast I bought a bunch at Sam's club and
have not had to refuel. I'm down to one so I'll let you know.

Hmmm, what about 10% rule? 😉

Do Like I say not what I do. 🙂 Actually the 19 mile training run with
it's quality is probably equivalent to 24 of the 50k course although
more that one would have been better. I've been running with these two
for a few years and I know how strong they are. I would not nudge them
to finish if I though there was any danger of injury. One female is 55
but she has run Hawaii ironman a few times so not new to endurance just
new to 26-31 miles. The younger one will likely kick my ass this March
at the HAT run. This is her third year and getting stronger. Now she
    wants to a 50 miles.

Then there was Barb who I know from the ultra circuit. Normally she
starts in front of me but this time she started behind us. With the
out-n-back I complimented her on going out easy. She said she wasn't
running easy - she has cross county skied for 5 hours on Saturday.
Reminded me of you with varied choices albeit less abuse.

I should've recognized that based on your group criterion. But the way

Confession 😉 When I was chatting with some people at the Winter Trails
event on Sat, I said I wasn't going out of their site with their demo
snowshoes since I had already had a 2-hr xt class (easier than normal)
and been out for about an hour on my own and was going to be going out
with ss club the next day (2-hr on yaktrax because of ice, as it turned
out). Someone laughed and asked me if I was training for an IM. I said,
no, training for retirement. He replied that he's got 2 yrs experience -
    highly recommended 🙂

ok, thanks. I've still got about 3 months worth in my garage. Since they
are sometimes out of my favorite flavor, I've tended to stock them when
they have them 😉 and increasingly so when I noticed a trend in optima
taking over shelf space a few months ago.

Let's just say the co-RD's said this was the most visually pleasing race
to date they got to score. Score as in verify name and drool with each
5k lap. These are very fit shapely people and also very pretty. I don't
use looks as a criteria it just turned out that way. A Tri coach friend

Course Hef takes advantage of his money and position
