a sign. That's not so good if they were trying to imply that a lot of people are
stressed out by doping in the peloton.

But as regards your irrelevant diversion, it could mean there were fans
(plural) holding signs (plural), but the prettiest photo showed only one
of them.

Hell, considering that I've seen the fans write "[rider name] EPO" on
the roads in years past, I'd say this idea has been with us for a while.
