It's designed for Radio Hams (I think) to see if you have line of sight between two antennas. So you put in the OS grid ref for point A, it's antenna height, then the same for the point B. BUT if you put in 1.6m for the height (that of a person) you can work out if you have line of sight from one place to another.
It allows for the curvature of the Earth, so it's pretty neat.
I have proved I should be able to see the Glyders from Higher Shelf in the Peak District, and Lincoln Cathedral from Burbage Moor. Sad, I know, but it kept me amused!
