New bikes must come equipped with front and rear reflectors. The front one attaches to the bolt holes for brake/mudguard at the fork crown. Why don't we have brackets for lights in the same place - like in the old days?
I've got a selection of front lights which attach on the handlebars - difficult to find space on dropped bars, and useless when there's a handlbar bag. I recently found an LED front light in Halfords which attaches to the LED loop on the front of my bar bag (reduced BTW). Would be nice though to have a secure fixing on the fork crown.
I'm going to be pointed towards a dynamo, aren't I?

Not always. Many now just bolt to a small bracket on the handlebars much like a cheap light mount, with rear reflectors mounting to a similar bracket on the seat post.

Some handlebar bags have an accessory bar to which lights can be attached.

I don't know why, they are pretty common over here: bracket above forkcrown, reflector integral with light

Bikes used to have a large bracket for a lamp to clip onto. It seems lamp manufacturers believe we need tohave a really easy way of fitting a front lamp but will tolerate a trickier means of fitting a rear. FWIW my B&M Lumotect is fitted using a secure fork crown mount.

A Minoura Space Grip would both free up space on the handlebar and get the light above a bar bag (or so I'm led to believe, I've never actually used a bar bag).
Cat Eye TL-LD500-F. I've had mine for quite a few years, so it's always possible that the mounting has changed since. It's a reasonable light for being seen by, I wouldn't use it for seeing by (not on the bike, anyway, but I've been using it as a camping torch for years).

We do, they have reflectors mounted on them at point of sale - unscrew the reflector and Presto! A light bracket is revealed :-)

Well, dynamo manufacturer....
On one of my bikes I have the front bracket from a B&M dynamo lamp which fixes to the fork crown. To the screw-hole for the B&M lamp I've fitted a short piece of approx 1in diameter delrin (though a bit of old wooden broom handle with a hole in the middle would do). This is about handlebar diameter, permitting me to fix a typical handlebar bracket for a small Cateye (4xAA) battery lamp to the bike.

IIRC these went out of fashion/were banned after a series of nasty accidents when the lamp came off the mount and jammed in the front wheel.
None of my bikes every had this bracket on a fork blade, always at the top part of the headset. I have of course seen them on the fork blade. To the OP, last year I made a bracket to fit a handlebar mount lamp to my fork crown out of a piece of an old Bluemels pump, a washing machine and a bottle cage mount. The mark II version was quite successful but now superceded by my Lumotec. The bracket can take two lamps.
