You can modify a Cateye light for rechargables, I did. You can buy
NIMH C cells at any computer swap meet, they cost about $10 each and
provide continuous output for 12 hours (!), but then take 41 hours to
recharge.
Also suggest you replace the feeble bulb supplied with the Cateye with a
suitable halogen bulb (about $14 from outdoors stores) and thus get
decent output. Battery chargers are cheap from [censored] Smith, and when
you've finished you have a complete rechargable system and change out of
$100.

Try buying a Cateye Stadium 3 rechargable front light system. If you order
from a US bike store and get it shipped via USPS like I did then it will be
much cheaper. But only do this if you want to look like a motor bike at
night.

The OP is enquiring about opinions re. a Cateye set of fr & rear lights for
$39. Don't you think that even a cheap Stadium[1] will be a bit of overkill?

Thanks guys. As Peter has suggested, I'm keen on getting something basic and
something that will take AA or AAA batteries as I have already invested in a
1hr charger and the batteries. I can't believe that some bike and sports
stores are selling front lights for 90 bucks plus. They have to be the most
expensive "torches" I have ever laid eyes on.

ebay in the u.s. looks like a viable option.
