Thank you. Now, I'm fairly sure that I can here a blip as the magnet passes the switch so it must be that something is preventing the computer receiving the information. I trust I can now stop playing with what's on the wheel and try to figure out what might be hindering this.
I good way to be sure of that without messing about with magnet/sensor positioning is to take a magnet (stronger than the one that came with the computer, if possible) and move it back and forth past the sensor. That way you can easily hold your ear next to the sensor without having to pick up the wheel and spin it. Does the computer pick anything up then?

The sensor is just a switch. The actuator is just a magnet. Every time the magnet goes past the switch it blips the switch on for a bit. If you try this in **very** quiet conditions you can sometimes even hear the switch switching.
Obviously the magnet has to go past closely enough to work the switch

You can often get the switch to close just by flicking it in the right direction with your fingernail.
