  1. I've had a pair of these pedals for a couple of years. I'm surprised
    Atomic Labs is still making them. I thought they'd stopped. They don't
    pass the brittle/break test. I broke my first pair by screwing in the
    studs. Don't use them for applications where they might hit a rock.
    They are light and have lots of curb appeal, but they ended up on my
    road Coker.

  2. The lexan pedal design has been improved upon over the last few years
    but the problem with the material is that with enough pedal strikes on
    rocks it will chunk off, according to the downhiller's testimonials on
    various DH blogs.

    I'm convinced that for support and grip and durability, the best
    overall Muni pedals are the lightened (cut out) Brooklin Iron Works
    Shinburgers. Josh has a pair that's got almost two years of hammering
    SB riding on them and they're still pretty much mint. Not the
    lightest, even when bored out this way and that, but for pure grip and
    support, nothing I've tried (many) is even close.

    People seem to split into two categories: people who haven't had them
    break find them amazing, people who have had them break understandably
    dislike them. The prospect of doing drops on pedals that are known to
    sometimes snap is a little unnerving.

    Don't be misled by the "bullet proof" nature of these pedals, either.
    If you're doing a substantial drop (e.g. measured in feet), then
    depending on your weight I'd estimate you could have more kinetic
    energy than a speeding bullet. A friend of mine (presumably
    unconvinced by my argument) worked out an estimate of this and we
    figure the falling cyclist could have *substantially* more energy than
    a bullet...

    Therefore, from a high-level, hand waving perspective, whilst the fact
    that the pedals are "bullet proof" is very impressive *they would
    actually need to be*.

    Of course it's not that simple in practice - bulk properties of
    materials are funny. Stress concentrations due to small cracks / chips
    with pointed tips can result in a crack propagating all the way through
    an object - although the material may be very strong, the concentrated
    stress at the tip of a crack is a lot higher than in the rest of the
    material and may be enough to enlarge the crack. This continues until
    the crack comes out the other side of the material - which has
    effectively been cut in half. There have been a number of cases where
    ships have broken in half because the square corners of their hatches
    started a crack which spread all the way around the hull - simply
    changing the hatch corners to be rounded avoided the stress
    concentration and made this particular model of ship safer.
