Who needs excuses? It's going to be one heck of a race. Lance will have
the benefit of being a vastly superior tactician, so I think Mayo will have
a bigger effect on Jan. The wildcard, in my book, remains Vino. Vino could
pull something out of a hat on a mountain stage and still be competitive
enough in a TT to hold onto a lead.

Lance, Jan, Vino, Tyler, Mayo... this could be a legendary TDF. I still say
that Lance is most "likely" to win, but put his odds under 50%.

Think I'm gonna have to get me a Tivo before the start!

Mayo has always seemed to have his moments of brilliance, but also his
moments a bit off the back (or getting throttled ala stage Luz Ardiden last
year). I think the constant high pace set by the postal team has taken its
toll in past years and could do so again ... if the departure of
Heras/arrival of Azevedo doesn't negatively impact that aspect of things.
Lance's team has always made A difference. I think this year they might
have to make THE difference.

Mayo is a non-factor for Lance. A much more serious contender is
Tyler.

to Lance in the TTT and 2:00 and 3:30 in the two ITTs. That's a lot of time
to make up. However, because Mayo can only lose 2:30 max in the TTT, and may
well take time out of Armstrong in the first ITT, he can be a definite thorn
in the side, causing Armstrong and USPS to spend more energy this year
keeping him close. Too bad Mayo can't borrow some of Zubeldia's TT prowess.

I'm not convinced that today's result indicates how the two will do at La
Mongie and Plateau de Beille. USPS's strength and Armstrong's explosiveness
may well give him the edge in those two stages.

Tyler, who took 1:30 out of Lance today has a much stronger team than Mayo
and is a much better TTer as well (He only lost 30 seconds in the first ITT
last year, and did better than Armstrong in the second, although Armstrong
did let up once Ullrich fell.) Plus he knows USPS, Armstrong and Brunyeel
very well. Much harder to bluff or trick into a stupid move.

Should be a fantastic July. I'm off to the store to stock up on VCR
cassettes. I anticipate a most enjoyable time on the trainer this winter.

How strange it would be if Lance lost his TdF crown and another American

The next couple of days in the Dauphine may tell us more about Armstrong's
climbing legs than today's result. Explainations from Tyler and Iban that
Armstrong had a bad day not with standing, I have to think that the scent of
Armstrong's blood is in the water for July. Last summer he was swarmed on
after showing weakness. This year he goes into the Tour having shown
weakness. Heras and Vino must be feeling very happy this evening.

BTW, got a call from Rudy. He said Jan was so stoked by today's result that
he went off to the clinic for an extra session of lipo.

Though both Mayo and Hamilton beat JVV's old record. Looking back on
Mayo's form this season he's been smoking, but he did have an off day
during the Veulta Asturias before scoring enough time in the last stage
(coming in 3rd) to win GC.
