Neil,

Since this spring I have a Salewa Summit. This rucksack has a kind of net
that is stretched over a bent back and thus providing an empty space betwenn
the back and the rucksack. At first I was skeptical. But now I must admit
that it works quite well (except for the straps... of course).
There is a drawback however: there is a loss in volume since the backpack's
back is bent more than usual...

I have always found the Berghaus Freeflow to be very good. Still get a bit
of sweat where the padding on the lower back is but besides that fairly
sweat free.

I carry two absorbant towels, one goes between me and the pack, the other is
drying on the outside of the pack. Change at rest stops. Works for me,
still sweaty, but a little better.

I've just bought a Berghaus Freeflow III and my early impressions are
like your Salewa. Very comfortable and stable but not as roomy as a
similar sized sack without the freeflow system.

Had a Deuter 32 for about a year which has a similar system. Was in the
Malaysian jungle with it this summer and while it didn't stop me from
sweating, it was very comfy and well ventilated. Probably a bit small for a
weekend (it'll do a basic summer over-nighter for a hammock/tarp setup, but
not a tent), but you can get larger variants.
