I am looking to upgrade my bike with Campagnolo Centaur but I want to
build the wheels myself. I would like to know if there are other less
expensive options than Chris King or Phil Wood that might allow radial
spokes (Campy doesn't). I thought Ritchey would be good but it seems
the only one they sell is 20 spoke version. Any suggestions would be
appreciated.
Thanks,

there is no real advantage to going radial. I know some people like Sheldon
Brown advocate radial spoking on the rear non drive side. I prefer X3 for most
wheels and don't see any reason to search for another hub which will support a
radial spoke pattern. If you really must have a radial wheel, you may as well
consider a used set of Mavic Heliums (with a Mavic Campy compatible cassette)
or Campy Electrons, etc. They provide no real advantage over X3 wheels but
they look cool. -

anyway. The drive side is not radial, the NDS doesn't have that high
tension and the fronts don't get any torque. Other than crazy light,
aluminum flange on Nukeproof hub, I haven't pulled spoke holes out
yet. -

Thanks,
bigskyYou are talking about upgrading to Campagnolo Centaur? This is not an
upgrade unless you are starting with Xenon. In case you are
wondering, I have a Centaur equipped bike. And a Chorus equipped
bike. Centaur is fine and works fine. But its not an upgrade level.
Its a works fine and no complaints level of components. Chorus or
Record are upgrade levels. You're mentioning Taiwanese made Ritchey in the same paragraph as
Campagnolo?I think you should just buy the Centaur grouppo. Put in on your bike
and ride. Don't buy 3-4-5 times as much boutique components. -

This is not a real-world risk with any decent quality hub, because the
left side spoke tension is so low (if it isn't this pattern doesn't make
any sense anyway.)You don't say what your bike currently has on it, but if you already
have a Shimano 8-or more speed hub, there's no need to replace it, just
get a 9- or 10-speed Shimano-compatible cassette and it will work fine
with a corresponding Campagnolo shifter and derailer.Even if you don't currently have a suitable Shimano hub, you might want
to consider buying one...they are far and away the best value in hubs.Sheldon "Shimagnolo" Brown

Perhaps a little clarification is in order. When I mentioned radial
lacing, I meant for the front wheel only. While I do not go out of my
way to make bike equipment purchases strictly on appearances, I was
hoping to keep the front and rear hubs the same brand/model/appearance.
I will keep the 3x pattern on the back, but I want to move to Campy,
so the Ultegra (7spd) stuff will be going.I rebuilt my current bike (Trek Elance 400) in 1990, including the
wheels, while working in a bike shop. I wanted Campy back then, but the
parts of the lowest line (Athena??) were still more expensive than
Ultegra. I was going to upgrade with Ultegra (see previous posts in
this NG), but when I found out that Centaur is priced close to Ultegra
while the only real difference from Record is weight, I decided on Centaur. Not only is this a project to improve my ride, but also an excuse to get
back into working on bikes ("typical engineer" some would say),
especially wheelbuilding. I thought I might try a radial spoke front
wheel and maybe going with lower spoke count on the front like 28 for
starters (another limit to Centaur, 32 is the lowest) and see how it
feels.I'm not a racer (yet, haha) nor made of money so Centaur is as high as
I'll go with Campy. Besides, I'm spending money on tools too (Park
truing stand to arrive tomorrow) as I no longer have free access to them.Needless to say, my mind is made up on Centaur, I'm just working out the
details on the wheels and continue looking for opinions/wisedom, etc.
And to the original question, are there any 3rd party hubs other than
King and Wood out there online? Thanks for all the feedback.bigsky

I have a radial setup on my front (Chorus hubbed) wheel. It works fine....
They just do NOT warranty the hub for that (neither does Shimano I am pretty
sure)On 5/21/04 6:38 PM, in article

Ck out http://oddsandendos.safeshopper.com/2/cat2.htm?731 They are selling
good sealed bearing hubs that are fairly light. Based on the wheel pricing
I'd say the hubs will probably be a good deal and they have a Campy
compatible version."bigsky" <[email hidden]> wrote in message
