No, I'm not prepared to accept that. I am not an astronomer; I have not the slightest idea which stars are what and I couldn't care less either. I do, however, like to see the pretty lights as the shooting stars flash across the sky, and I'm British. Were I interested in astronomy I'd subscribe to a relevant newsgroup and discuss the technical stuff therein. I'm not. I like to walk. Telling me the time in a language I can't understand because I'm obviously too thick to know about it is not good enough for me. This is a walking newsgroup, populated by people who haven't necessarily had the benefit of a scientific education beyond what was required at school. I left school a long time ago, and in any case I never learnt about different ways of telling the time. If I'm to understand non-walking posts on this newsgroup they should be in simple English. I've already started automatically killing photographic and GPS threads because they get to the point where they are no longer comprehensible to non-experts, and I'm sick of it. Ranting? Yes, and why not. If you - generic - want to talk technically about things other than putting one foot in front of the other, fine. But don't you (any of you) *dare* belittle me or anyone else just because I don't have the background of education that you (generic again) have. -- I try to be a good example to my children, but they just see me as a dire warning.

Well, I'm coming late to this argument, but I'd have thought that as the original post was about astronomy, it made sense to discuss it in astronomical terms. Same surely goes for other topics. If the discussion is about photography, it makes sense to discuss pixels and not call them "little dots". When we discuss rucksacks, capacity is measured in litres - I've yet to see anyone complain about this and suggest it's in cubic inches. Weight - seems to be all in grammes. However, I'll bet there's a fair proportion of the readership who would consider it simpler to use ounces. Think of it as an education - Google is always there to help.

Did you see French and Saunders on Friday? They now have a rathergood opening title sequence. The kittens are very similar to www.rathergood.com/soluble but they're thrash metal. I can't wait till Friday cos I wanna see the kittens again. Oh no..... I'll be out on Friday night .... will have to beg someone to record it for me.
Both excellent! They're the sort of things that I could show to people at work and they'd just stare at me and say "Who is the little girl?" and not understand why I'm wetting myself laughing.

You'd have been right though - I am feeling extremely grumpy. I feel better having asked Charlie about UTC or whatever it was and got a blank look from him. He is very highly educated, highly intelligent, of an academic bent and very well up in 'general knowledge'. I'd have expected him to know something so well known - he usually does. But he didn't.
