Kevin, although I don't know the cause of your leg cramps, I have had them since I was a teenager.
They usually start in the foot then hit my calf and in front of my shinbone. I get immediate relief
from wringing out a cloth in the hottest water I can get, then placing it on the cramp area. Works
every time, but it's a b**** when you have to get up in the middle of the night to do it. I've never
seen anyone mention it, but it certainly works for me.

I don't know if this will help. I am not diabetic but some of my children and husband are but we
use Quinine Water and drink it several times a day for calf and thigh spasms.

I appreciate your response. Quinine is ototoxic: it can cause permanent loss of hearing through
    nerve damage.

Yes, heat helps - hot shower or bath. but generally, for me, only as long as the heat is being
applied. Try eating a banana a day and see if you still get them.

Thanks I'll try anything at least once. Got 'em again last night.

  5. AND, if you drank about 10-12 gallons of quinine water a day, you MIGHT get enough for an
    adverse effect.

In the US, quinine water mainly contains citric acid - minimal quinine. All the brit quinine water I
have had, had a LITTLE more quinine, and a moderate amount less citric acid.

I haven't had a malaria attack for many years, but believe me, quinine water was NO help - you
needed the pills (and I have FINE hearing)

Kevin, I was eating so many bananas anyway that I felt like a monkey swinging in the trees! I was
told to cut back since my potassium was too high.

Have you tried potassium chloride, sold as salt substitute? For cramps in my calf muscles, KCl
obliterates them in seconds. There is no known explanation as to why.

Potassium is a known agent in muscle activity. Both too much and too little are dangerous.

I would imagine your BGs were too high too.

Last week we in Melbourne had two days of 36 degrees plus (that's over 90 American). Went to the

I hope you folks down under had a wet winter so you don't have the severe wildfires you have had in
    past years.

True, but why it only takes a few grains of KCl on the tongue, barely enough to taste, will
eliminate cramps within seconds when it couldn't possibly spread that fast, is unknown. The amount
required isn't enough to throw off anybody's potassium level.

I know we're way OT for leg-cramps, but what the heck:-)

Actually Sleepy, that often creates the problem. This winter was OK in that rains were moderate in
coastal areas (although the inland is still in drought), but last time we had a wet winter the
underbrush grew tremendously, putting a much higher fuel load on the bush. That's exactly what led
    to the wildfires around Canberra.

We have a continuing battle here between the NPWS (National Parks and Wildlife Service) who should
be doing controlled burning in the winter to reduce the fuel, and the various Fire authorities. The
NPWS never burn off enough, when it's cooler and more controllable, because they are too concerned
at roasting some of the wallabies and koalas. The fire services are more concerned at not roasting a
    few humans.

I'm on the side of the fire services. Last Christmas I had to move the motorhome in the Blue
Mountains when I woke at two am to an orange sky, stifling smoke and the sound of the bush burning
next to us. Later, when we returned, we found lots of dead 'roos, koalas and wombats - but also lots
of ash where houses used to be.

Incidentally, something no-one seems to have mentioned in discussing the California fires. You
should cut down every imported eucalyptus in California and turn it into lumber or fuel. Not the
    wisest import your forefathers chose.

OK, I will rephrase the post. Good Luck this summer, I hope conditions are better this year as
opposed to the last couple, when it comes to the wildfire situation.

Thanks; sorry, you weren't to know you hit a nerve about the NPWS :-)

Obviously I rambled on too much as usual. Hidden in the verbiage was "We have a continuing battle
