I was being facetious. Apologies. I don't think there's any one answer. In the old days, they were restricted to two bidons, so they stole water/booze/whatever they could from elsewhere.

  5. Not sure what the pros are consuming but a good rule of thumb is 500ml per hour...

Is that nearly one pint per hour ?

    Yes. 1 imperial pint = 20 fl. oz. = 568mL.

But if you read the links I posted above, they'll tell you not to drink to a schedule.

If a cyclist drinks nearly one pint for every hour while cycling in the tour and a stage lasts for over four hours they consume four pints how do they do it without stoping to pass urine ?

    sweat

What isn't sweated out is pee'd out in organised group peeages in the Tour...

Those who need to pee stop and get the business done - the rest of the peleton rides tempo until they are back...

That is too little, especially in July heat. One liter per hour is better.

At only 500 ml per hour, you could easily be down 3 kilos or 4% body weight after six hours.

D@mn! How much do you sweat?

Me - around 450ml/hour in winter up to 600ml/hour in summer (a South African summer no less!).

@Top Dog - best thing to do is weigh yourself naked (yes naked) - then go running/riding/swimming/whatever your sport then head back to the scale - get naked again - towel yourself off to remove all sweat then weigh yourself again. Divide the difference by however many hours you exercised and BOOM! you have your very own personalised sweat per hour ratio in ml/hour.

Don't forget to factor in any fluids you take in during your hour of exercise.

Drinking your sweat ratio will keep your topped up with fluids without the risk of dehydration of overhydration.

You normally cannot drink your sweat ratio. Also, if you just consume water without replacing the salts that are lost, you are in risk of water intoxication.

500 ml per hour is nothing. It is very easy to lose more than a liter per hour in the heat.

I once drank eight gallons of fluid in thirty hours during an ultrarunning event.
