  1. Hi ALL -

I'm debating between WW and LC for my diet, and was searching for some
    'real people' experiences.

I found this site: http://www.theweighwewere.com . I mainly read the
WW stories, but there were tons of LC stories, too. I'll read those
    tomorrow 🙂

  3. Hi there,

Just wanted to say congrats for being succesful with the GI approach. I
have written a website as an introduction to the topic - at
www.lowgidieting.com, and I really feel that low GI is the way forward.
    Well done!

    All righty:

    4/27/05, I weighed about 260 pounds.

    5/17/06, I weigh about 200 pounds.

Although I initially followed Atkins to the letter, at this point I
    don't count carbs or calories.

I just eat when I'm hungry. I eat a big salad every night, bacon and
eggs typically every morning, and I frequently skip lunch and just
snack instead (nuts, cheese, Atkins bar, something like that). I still
drink beer and liquor when I like, and I indulge my coffee habit
    regularly. Life is good.

I also run 30 miles a week, give or take.

I don't have any metabolic data, but I'm sure I've improved in some
areas. Mostly, I just did this for the weight loss, and on that note,
    it's worked marvelously.

  6. That's very impressive Dr Ernst!!! Congratulations!!!

  7. I think this is something I could use too - I'm debating what kind of
diet I need to be on (I'd like to lose some pounds obviously, and just
get trimmer generally) but I am torn between LC and something like WW,
too. Mostly because I love pasta, and I know that's a big no no on LC.
Does it get easier with time - the not having it? (I expect so? I mean,
when I gave up chocolate for Lent once it was horrible but it got
    better over time.)

So, I too would love to hear some stories of real-world, how this went
for you how hard was it, kind of stuff.

    Hi ALL -

I'm debating between WW and LC for my diet, and was searching for some
    'real people' experiences.

I'm a real person with a real life story and LC worked for me. I
started back in November 2001 at 182 and have been maintaining steadily
at 120-124 for a few years. Life is sure much better in size 4-6 jeans
    than frumpy size 16's.

I don't do Atkins because my system can't handle high fat. Instead I
eat a modified low fat, low carb approach. I avoid sugar, breads,
pasta, rice, potatoes - all the starchy stuff - and go for veggies,
protein, limited fruit. I'm never hungry. I don't do processed food.
I've gotten into debates with folks about the bars and other "net carb"
stuff - it works for them but not for me.

Excercise is key for me. I walk several times a week, work out at a
local gym and love being fit.

Low carb works. No doubt about it. Sheesh, I'm no kid. I have a son in
college! And I love the fact that he's proud of the way I look. Best of
    all, I feel great.

When you pick your plan, make it something you can live with over time.
It's easy to decide you're going to go on WW or follow the trendy
daVinci Diet, but if you can't handle the day in, day out "rules" of
the program, it won't work out. That's what I love about my own version
of low carb. I could and still can eat in just about any restaurant in
town, never feel deprived (once my current WOE helped me get over that
pesky sugar addiction that has undermined me most of my life) and
    always feel great.

Good luck. I'm living proof it's never too late!

    Hey Lady!
Haven't seen you in a while, hope all is going well. Kind of passing
through...not much traffic here these days, low carbing's hey-day has
passed and most of the old timers have moved on from the newsgroup.
Kind of like you. :-) I hang out in alt.true-crime these days, so
drop by if you want to find me.

    Take care,
    Carmen

  10. Yeah. It sure isn't the same. I will pop over there and see ya'. Sounds
interesting. Hey, I'm writing a novel.....not a true crime story, but
it might be interesting to find a fresh voice! Do you still have my old
e-mail address? I tried contacting you the other day after I read your
Topamax post but it swacked back.

How you been anyway? See you in the other forum. Soon.

Cool. :-) I've been learning new "skillz", like roasting my own
    coffee. Mwahhaha, be afraid!

I didn't have one, but you know me - I found one. <G> It's first
initial, last name, training abbreviation then @ ispdotcom? Will that
    one do it?

It's going alright on this end. Howard is presently cancer-free, he's
proved to the Army that he's fully capable of continuing to be a
soldier with a robo-hand and the Kid is heading into her senior year of
high school as one of the most stealth BPs you'd ever hope to see. I'm
also (God help the state of TN) a state officer for Army MARS now
(Interoperability officer) as we get deeper into EmComm. All in all,
life is good! See you in ATC after I do some treadmill time.

    Take care,
    The Blondinator

I don't think that one will fly. I have a few that will work
better.....firstname1518atyahoo.com is a good one and then
    firstnameatlastnamedotcom works too.

Glad to hear the family is doing well. Life here in Boca Raton is
interesting. The recent hurricanes have thrown us a curve ball. Wilma
was no Katrina but we're still reeling from her long fingers. Here we
    go again............

Just checking out the true crime group now.

In my 60's I dropped 60 pounds on Low Carb two years ago. Feel great.

You said you were mainly reading Weight Watcher stories of success on
    the website www.theweightwewere.com.........

And you were going to read the Low Carb stories there "tomorrow".

What did you think of the Low Carb success stories you read there?

    1) Eat Till SATISFIED, Not STUFFED... Atkins repeated 9 times in the book

    book
    4) A sensible eating plan, and follow it. (Atkins, Self Made or Other)

  14. I've lost 50 lbs since Valentines Day on LC. I have 40 more to go.

I'd lost 60 once before on low-fat and was so hungry that only immense
will power kept me from cheating. I would literally sit there and stare
at the clock waiting until the next time I could eat.

With LC, I'm not nearly as hungry and the weight seems to be coming off
even faster. On low fat 50 lbs took me 6 months, not 3.

I eat pretty much like a cave woman - meat, nuts, seafood, and
nonstarchy vegetables. Some cheese but not tons. And once in a blue
moon a few special carbs (last night had 5 corn chips with this mexican
chicken stuff I made for dinner - about 8 g of carbs).

IMHO this fits far better with how my metabolism works than low fat,
and is less painful. I'm one that has always needed protein at each
meal or I'd be ravenous and shaky by time for the next. Tried going
vegetarian once a long time ago and felt like hell until I stopped.

  15. personally i've been reading stories and mostly am just happy to see
that people not only lost weight but are MAINTAINING the weight loss.
that's ususally my problem - is that if i can manage to lose it, i just
gain it right back. LC appeals to me because it seems to be more about
changing eating habits than it is about being a "Fad", so to speak. i
like that. because if i dont stop eating heavy carb, heavy starch
things, i won't get thinner and stay thin no matter what i do.

Amen to that. I had lost 50 lbs years ago then celebrated on our
    anniversary.
That was the end of my losing and I gained 70 back. I have decided that I
must consider sugar and starches to be absolute poison and never look back.
And no giving myself an excuse "oh, I can have this tonight and go clean (no
sugar) tomorrow." There is no tomorrow with poison.
Losing weight and keeping it off must be a different life.

Amen to that! I've come to the realization that I now see food as kind
a PARTNER in my life. I want GOOD things from my partner, and I don't
want that partner to be all flash and no substance. If you realized
that a partner was always sweet and supportive to your face, but
constantly stabbed you in the back and turned various other aspects of
your life into [censored], you would probably take steps to find a different
    partner.

So, I too would love to hear some stories of real-world, how this went
for you how hard was it, kind of stuff.

I grew up in an Italian family and grew fat and diabetic on bread and
pasta, not having a real sweet tooth. Starch is just as bad as sugar.

The thing is... pasta has almost no taste in-and-of-itself, it's a
carrier for other flavors. When you start skipping the pasta, you
discover all it ever did was dilute the flavors you're after. So it
turns out living without it is pretty easy.

Google the recipe for Italian sausage soup - that is good, some of the
    yummiest stuff I've ever eaten.

Take a bowl and mix some ricotta with some chives and grated parmesan,
maybe a bit or parsely and oregano. Top with marinara sauce and
shredded mozzarella and nuke. Low-carb "lasagna" that is more
flavorful than the stuff with pasta.

Make a white sauce - alfredo or maybe an asiago-based sauce and mix in
some leftover cooked chicken. If you must eat it "over" something,
throw it over something bland like steamed cauliflower. Some people
use "spaghetti" squash or wilted baby spinach greens. Or just eat the
    chicken and sauce as is.

Stir-fry portabella mushrooms, red, yellow and orange bell peppers,
onions and garlic together with some basil, parsley and oregano in
olive oil. Eat as is or use as a topping for salads. If you do
low-carb tortillas or wraps, you can add this to sandwiches too.

I make meatballs and meatloafs without breadcrumbs now. I found an
copycat recipe for Progresso Italian Breadcrumbs and just leave the
actual bread out. The meatballs and/or meatloaf tastes *more*
flavorful without the bread. A bowl of meatballs in sauce with some
cheese melted over it is awesome. Really yummy.

Several versions of "pizza" are possible. You can spread out ground
italian sausage or hamburger on a pan, bake until the grease is out,
drain, and then use the resulting meat "pancake" as a pizza crust, add
toppings and bake. Or you can use a low-carb tortilla and top that.

IMO, starch is the easiest thing to go without. Most starches are
fairly bland foods anyways, used in cooking primarily as fillers to
"stretch" foods. So leaving them out of your cooking just improves the
    flavors.
