  1. OK...I'm down 8 lbs from mid Dec. Was 198 and 14.5%, now I'm 190 and 12.5%.

So based on the calcs, 37% of the loss was LBM, 63% fat. Is this a pretty
normal balance for everybody else when cutting? Should I be doing anything
special to minimize the LBM loss besides continue lifting heavy and keep
    protein up? I don't do much cardio...maybe 2 - 3 times per week, 20 - 30
    minutes.

    Larry,

Compared to you I'm a newbie, I don't count when I'm cutting, just eat a lot
less - If I get more serious I'll be more technical in cutting.
I suppose apart from keeping protein up, and continuing lifting there
ain't a lot more you can do when cutting to keep LBM. Be nice if an expert
    here could comment.

You lost 8 lbs since december. Not a fast rate. Supposedly, you lost 37%
lbm and 63% fat. Supposedly. Be happy.

Seems like you're losing a lot of LBM to me. My own BF log is pretty spotty
and I don't trust my own BF measurements, but I'm not sure I do any better.

If this is really the most important thing to you you could try UD2.0.

It is important under these circumstances Hugh, to keep your "pretty
spotty log" to yourself, or take the precaution of parceling it up in
those proprietary sheaths prior to use, for fear of spreading
    infection!!

I do hope that helps!! ;o)

I averaged just under 1 lb per week. That's about what I wanted. Slow
weight loss = minimal LBM loss...or so I've been told. And it's not that I
have much to lose. It's just this is the first time I actually took the
time to calculate "what" I lost, and almost 40% LBM shocked me a bit. I
wonder if a faster loss would be different? Worse? Better? I really have
    no idea.

I personally am permanently in a state of incredible leanness and am the
    image of masculine beauty...

    anyway

seems like quite a bit of LBM to lose when you're only dropping a few ounces
every week. But whatever method you're using to measure bodyfat is probably
not all that consistent, so the real numbers could be quite different. I'd
do more cardio rather than less food to lose weight, but then I'm just about
    always going to say that.

Fascinating read, but be warned--Lyle says that it's for people who are
really committed to losing fat, are willing to be insanely detailed, and
can't lose the fat any simpler way--and he means it. I tried a round of
it, hated the carb load, and decided that I wasn't willing to make the
rest of my training subservient to fat loss.

Seriously, I'd read your post the other day, and didn't bother to

Since the bf reduction; any notable changes in appearance?
How's your overall strength holding up?

    Just curious.

The 3 point caliper skin fold method. I have the same guy do it at my gym,

Strength is static, which is expected when dropping weight. Usually, when I
go back into a bulking cycle, strength spikes rather quickly, so I'm not
    concerned about that.

Appearance is good, yes. I have no complaints. Abs are showing, good
vascularity in my arms and good definition everywhere. My 33 Levis are too
    lose, so it's time for a belt or 32s. For a guy soon-to-be 48, I look damn
good, so I'm happy with my results. I'm not a PL, or BB really. I lift for
fitness at this point. I would consider myself a martial artist first, and
    weight lifter second.

I talked to a PT tonight (I know...no flames please). I've known her for a
couple of years, and even though she's a PT, she's quite knowledgeable. She
suggested more cardio...four times per week for 45 minutes, in addition to
my weights. I'm going to give that a try for a month since I like cardio
    anyway.

It's not that 10% BF is the magic number, but damn, I hate to be beat. That
was my goal dammit, and I'm going to make it come hell or high water.

Problem here is that it makes a guess at your fat percentage assuming your
fat distribution is normal. If for example you were carrying a bit of fat on
your [censored] and legs, as in more than normal for a bloke, and when you lost
weight you lost quite a bit of fat off there, then your 3 point skin-fold
measurements wouldn't change as much as they 'should' to reflect the amount
of fat you actually lost. Have you actually lost strength in any exercises?

Are you using a Tanita scale or similar type of BF scale? If so
then there is no way you can trust you BF numbers.

The 3 point caliper skin fold method. I have the same guy do it at
my gym, same time of the day...after work, before workout. The
most important thing is that it is consistent test to test. That's
    what matters to me.

Problem here is that it makes a guess at your fat percentage
assuming your fat distribution is normal. If for example you were
carrying a bit of fat on your [censored] and legs, as in more than normal
for a bloke, and when you lost weight you lost quite a bit of fat
off there, then your 3 point skin-fold measurements wouldn't change
as much as they 'should' to reflect the amount of fat you actually
lost. Have you actually lost strength in any exercises?

Yes, that's true, but it's not really that big of a deal. After all,
it's not like you are in a competition to see who has the lowest
measurable bodyfat. The results you are looking for are observable in
the mirror. Skinfold caliper tests are primarily useful for measuring
your progress. The tests don't give a completely accurate absolute
fat percentage, but they do give you a number that you can compare
over time and see if you are making progress or not.

The ultimate test is to stand in front of a mirror and see what
"jiggles", but for tracking purposes the skinfold caliper test is more
    than good enough.

Agreed. And even though the number itself may be off, if it is consistant
test to test, you can at least calculate LBM and fat loss/gain as you track
    your weight.
