How about this explanation: when he realized that he'd have to go too
deep into the red to ride the Dauphine competitively, he rode it for
training, never really dipping into the red.

Not hard to imagine at all that at a training pace he'd be 15 minutes
behind Levi, et al... riding at race pace.

He wasn't having a bad day, he deliberately didn't waste himself.

for preperation and yes, I am pointing towards blood doping^^
